REACTIONS to ART

by ROBERT S. HURWITZ Harry Hillson's canvas actually smiles at you as his forceful line leads you playfully through his abstracts. Harry Hillson from Sarasota is the subject of a one-man show at the new-look Granville Gallery. This is a superb show that compliments contemporary trends yet innovates in the individual style of the artist. To gain the full flavor of Hillson's world you must be prepared to contemplate. The work is direct, composed, color oriented and very symbolic. In the presentation each canvas offers a symbolic puzzle that the viewer must solve. If you get the visual message, the artist's or your own, you'll be happily content. If you don't get the message his work will come through as nothing more than a lot of lines and shapes. The big plus in Hillson's work is that he gives you something to like, to think about, or disagree about. Answers are found in "Homage to Line I" and "II". In them are background color, then the happy effect of black lines that weave in and out, to and fro, up and down and all around. Everyone doodles; Hillson's preoccupation is with professional doodling.
