An Alley Helps This Church

Ever hear of an alley that helped a church? It's happening at First Christian Church, 222 Menores Ave. First Christian found out recently it couldn't build its new $150,000 sanctuary where originally intended. The City of Coral Gables is planning to come through with an alley that will chop off a strip of church property 10 feet wide and 110 feet long, said Bill Fagan, the Gables' Public Works Director. In a case such as this, the land owner usually "donates" the land needed, said Fagan, and the City builds the alley without assessing the land-owner. It's just as well, said the Rev. Luther M. Cole of First Christian. The church will now build a larger and better sanctuary on what is now the congregation's parking lot, said Rev. Cole. There's more room to build on the parking lot than on the site originally planned for the sanctuary, he said. The sanctuary will seat 500 persons, 100 more than the present sanctuary. Work should start within three years, Rev. Cole said. Three committee chairmen important in the sanctuary's building program are: Church corporation president, S. D. Griffin, Jr., 1841 SW 74th Ave.; stewardship (finance), T. D. Holladay, Jr.; 8425 SW 157th St.; and property Russell Tegtman, 832 Alhambra Cir.
