Over a Bookish Tea, Some History

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor The Coral Gables Woman's Club unwittingly pulled an "oldie" out of the past Thursday when it held a tea at City Hall. Occasion was the honoring of the board of the Coral Gables Library due to the building of the new $400,000 library on City Hall grounds. It was a windy day, and the tea was held in the long, covered patio opening off the entrance of the Spanish-designed three story City Hall. But what most of the guests didn't know, was that this patio was designed and built years ago where residents and winter visitors could wait among beautiful surroundings for the bus to take them to Miami to shop. Even Mayor Robert. L. Searle, there with Mrs. Searle didn't know that. The architect for the new building, Edward T. Rempe, who came to Coral Gables in 1924, had forgotten it. He was there with Mrs. Rempe. Miss Margaret "Peggy" Beaton, librarian at the old library built on the Coral Gables Woman's Club grounds, wore a white cotton. Mrs. John H. Worley, club president, was in pink. Mrs. M. Lewis Hall, president in 1951-53 of the club and just finishing her two years as Florida Federation president, was there. An April theme with dolls in all white with immense white hats on a greensward was the center decoration of the tea table. Cherry punch and cake were served. Mrs. Evand D. Roser, twice president of the club in different years was there. Also there was Mrs. Stanley P. Fosgate, 4202 San Amaro Dr., who served in 1955-57. Mrs. Fosgate and I strolled out into the large square rose garden, and she told me that the west wall of this historic garden would be razed for the library building. Just now the only building there is one with rest rooms for both men and women, law for all bus stations. Red and pink roses, some 100 bushes in the center of the lawn, were all in bloom and it was a pretty sight. (L-R) MRS. WORLEY, MISS BEATON AND MRS. HALL
