Jacobson Pledges Strong CC Leadership

By having it too good, Gableites may be caught unawares by the "tremendous changes in our community," the Chamber of Commerce's new president challenged last night (Wednesday.) President Al Jacobson suggested that "many of our residents, business people and public officials have become a little bit complacent... "(It) is important to realize that there are areas of conflict that must be resolved; how wisely we deal with these problems will mean much for the effectiveness of this administration and the future of this city." Jacobson said the Chamber's Program of Work, soon to be drawn up, "will provide opportunities for measuring how far we have come and for charting the road ahead." The 36th annual dinner of the chamber, held at the Gables Country Club, was a sellout. About 330 people ate roast beef and heard the bombastic mayor of Kansas City, Roe Bartle, in the featured address. Details will be carried in next week's Times.

When?

When will the Retail Merchants Division elect its new chairman? In about three weeks, according to the Chamber of Commerce, which has reorganized the RMD under new bylaws. Sam Miller is outgoing chairman.

Fit? Man, We're the Fittest!

Coral Gables High School, which wanted to set an example of physical fitness for the nation, has done just that. In answer to the President's plea for "physical fitness," Gables High set up an intensive program and succeeded in getting over 99 per cent of its students to pass the minimum fitness test. Nationally, only 60 per cent of students manage to pass the strenuous exercises. Coral Gables achieved this by shifting its physical education emphasis to wrestling, gymnastics, track and weight training for boys and to track, modern dance and field games for girls. A minimum of eight minutes of vigorous exercise was also included in each PE period. U.S. Marine Corps fitness tests were used and an incentive plan for out-of-school physical development was introduced. More than 100 boys qualified for Marine Fitness Awards.

Stamp Savers Needn't Go to the Post Office

Coral Gables is fast becoming a trading stamp redemption center — two are in existence and two more are coming. Latest addition is King Korn Stamp Co. of Chicago which has signed a lease for facilities at 20-22 Miracle Mile in a building owned by Charles H. Finkelstein. The firm plans to open June 1, according to Finkelstein. Stevens Market is the biggest local outlet for this stamp company. Last week, it was reported that Plaid Stamp, a new outlet for A&P stores, would locate in half the store formerly occupied by Curlee's Department Store on the northwest corner of Galiano Avenue and Miracle Mile. Merchants Green Stamps have a redemption store at 2030 Ponce de Leon Blvd. and S&H stamps are redeemed next door at 2020 Ponce. S & H is the outlet for the Publix Supermarket chain and Merchants Green for Food Fair, one of the first to adopt the stamp scheme.
