Happy Days Seen at Temple As Money, Members Come In

Rabbis are being interviewed by Temple Zamora lay leaders who said this week they have every indication that the Jewish synagogue will pull out of the financial crisis that threatened to close it. Two rabbis have been interviewed. Questionnaires are being sent to the membership to determine the qualities they want in a religious leader, said John Bigman, who has led the movement to save the temple. Bigman said he is confident the $4,000 needed to make the temple solvent by June will be raised. He said $2,500 in current debts had been paid off last week, including a $185 trash bill to the City of Coral Gables. A total of more than $9,000 has been collected, Bigman said, reducing the current debt from $27,000 to approximately $17,000. Bigman said he hopes the congregation will be able to refinance the $60,000 loan from Coral Gables Savings and Loan Association which was in default and over which the financial institution filed a foreclosure suit recently. Membership has grown from a low of 30 to 40 families up to 114, he said, and personal contacts with former members is expected to bring back an additional 30. This would create a congregation large enough to support the temple, Bigman said. "The enthusiasm is terrific," he said following a series of lay and temple meetings. "By June, we should be right back where we should have been," said Bigman, who plans to return then to his summer home in Willsboro, N.Y.
