Rehearsals are under way for the 10th annual Minstrel and Variety Show to be presented by the Wesley Fellowship Class of the First Methodist Church of Coral Gables. The Coconut Grove Playhouse will again be the scene of this production on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, May 24, 25, and 26th, at 8:15 p.m. For nine years the show has been a sellout. Many local people make up the cast of approximately 100, which provides comedy, music and dancing for more than two hours. Mr. Interlocutor this year will be Ben Knupp, oil company executive. The end men will be played by Judge Hal P. Dekle, Judge William R. Culbreath, Ed Bishop, Delta Airlines executive; Attorney Joe Creel, Oscar Stroberg, business executive, and Jim Powell, landscaper. For the first time, the end men will sing as well as dance. Soloists will be Miss Joyce McGrew, Mrs. Ben Knupp, Mrs. Merrill Easterlin, Mrs. Helen Allison, Norman Clay-ton, Gregory O'Berry, Sam Bailey, Rogers Elkenberry, Charlie Stoker and Ralph Eastridge. The Men's Chorus of the First Methodist Church of Coral Gables, composed of 30 voices, will also sing several numbers. Leo Livingston and Mel Hicks, both formerly banjoists in vaudeville, will make their first public appearance together. Though they had heard of each other, they had never met before this year and in the past few months have played several charity shows together for veterans. Livingston has appeared in each of the class's past nine minstrels with his son, Mark Jr., now a student at Dade County Junior College. Franklin Maury, manager of the Miracle Theater, will be a new act this year, doing a tap dance. A trio of freshmen from the University of Miami will sing several modern folk songs. Miss Glenda Dell and Bob Cup, both graduate students in the Music department of the University of Miami, will appear. Mrs. William Nordyke, who has danced professionally at the Playhouse, will be featured in a specialty number.
