KAY STRAIN ... academic leader

In Swahili, Kay's Magna Cum Laude

Kay Strain is finishing her college work in Africa with highest honors, her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Richard Strain of Santa Maria Street, have been informed. Kay will graduate "with distinction," the equivalent of our magna cum laude. She is one of four in a class of 200 to be so honored and the only girl. She has been studying at Makerere College in Kampala, Uganda, at what is an extension of the University of London. Tuesday, the Strains received word that she has gotten her teaching assignment, at a town called Machakos, Kenya, which is 30 miles south of Nairobi. There, she will teach in the Swahili tongue as part of her three years abroad. In July, there'll be a family reunion in Kenya. Dr. Strain, a brain surgeon, has been invited by the U.S. State Department to give lectures in that part of the world. He, Mrs. Strain and their two sons, 19-year-old Robert and 12-year-old Ricky, will make the trip. Included is a five-day safari. Ricky will remain in Kenya with Kay where he will enroll in school. Dr. and Mrs. Strain and Robert will continue to Europe where the doctor will address several other groups. For the Strains, overseas service is a family matter. The doctor spent two years in China as a medical missionary and his wife five years there, plus three years together in India.

Refugee Wedding Party Held at Mixsons' Home

There was a happy air of excitement at the household of Dr. and Mrs. William T. Mixson, 720 Escobar Ave., last Saturday night. They were hosts for a reception following the marriage of Cuban refugees, one of whom lives with the Mixsons. He is Gustavo Sorzano (Murphy) who took as his bride, Maria, at University Baptist Church chapel. Gustavo, one of his brothers and his mother, Mrs. Hilda Murphy, have been with the Gables family for a year and a half. Murphy? A Cuban named Murphy? "It seemed strange to me, too," answered Mrs. Mixson, "but Mrs. Murphy told me there are many Cubans by that name. A lot of Smiths, too." One of the side benefits of having the family with them has been that Mrs. Mixson brushed up on her school-girl Spanish while their youngest son, three-year-old Bobby, has learned it naturally. The Mixsons' other two children are nine-year-old Dick and 11-year-old Bill III.
