Maybe Amigos Here Yet
Coral Gables High School's student government is polling the homerooms to determine if Cavaliers will support Operation Amigo next year. Principal Harry Rath turned down the program this spring. A number of students have protested, saying Gables High should sponsor one of the trips by Latin Students. Many high schools have already done so. The homeroom poll idea originated in a Student Government meeting last week, the first held since December. William Byrd, director of student activities, told the students they could have another Student Government meeting before school's end to discuss the matter. Sophomores and juniors are being asked if they are interested in keeping Amigos in their homes. Operation Amigo is a program under which Latin American students visit Florida as the guests of high school students for a personal look at America at work, study and play. In turning down Amigos for Gables High, Principal Rath said the school already has its own Amigo program with 400 Cubans enrolled. He pointed to over-crowded classrooms as another reason for not bringing in visiting students.
Griping Miracle Mile Bandit Gets Unsecured $647 Loan
TELLING HOW a robber held up Local Loan Company on Miracle Mile Tuesday and got away with $647 is office worker Patti Garner. Center, making phone call, is Jerry Fleming, company representative. Investigating officers are, the patrolman on the Mile, Sgt. J. C. Powers, and Detective T. G. Timanus. The bandit is still at large. (Times photo by Raymond Lang) Local Loan Company, 155 Miracle Mile, was robbed of $647 Tuesday by a bandit who complained about the size of the take. "There should have been more," the young, hawk-nosed robber told his victims, according to Officer George Linbey. He entered the loan company sporting a small caliber pistol at approximately 1:25 p.m. He had a handkerchief over his face. The bandit handed rope to employe Gerald T. Fleming, 9911 SW 62nd St., and ordered him to tie up three other persons in the loan office. They were identified by Gables police as E. A. Smith, 2205 SW Eighth St.; Miss Mary Lou Ward, 6531 SW 43rd St.; and Miss Patti Garner, 3651 SW 11th St. The bandit's handkerchief slipped off his face as he pulled off the robbery. His features were clearly seen by the victims, police said. A search followed for the dark-clad man who got away.
A Cut-Rate Fine On Parking Ticket Saves You $19,292
Metro said yes Tuesday to something the Gables Chamber of Commerce and City Commission have been seeking for two years: reduction of traffic fines for over-time parking to $1. On the basis of tickets issued here last year, it would save Gables parkers $19,292 a year—IF. The IF is if the ticket is paid within 48 hours. If not, it's going to cost more than the old system. The savings of $19,292 is arrived at by multiplying the number of tickets issued by the reduction of $1. However, if a delay of more than 48 hours and up to a week follows the issuance of a ticket, a $3 fine will be charged. OLD FINE, WAS STILL $2. The graduated fine would then jump to $5 after a one-week delay. OLD FINE, STILL $2. If the ticket is not paid until a bench warrant is issued, the fine will become $10. OLD SCHEDULE, $5. And if the matter goes to Metro Court, the fine will be $15. NO EXACT FINE FIGURE UNDER THE OLD ORDINANCE. Richard Brinker, clerk of the Metro Court, said Tuesday the ordinance still has some practical aspects that the Metro Court will have to deal with. Just how many more will pay their fines than before remains to be seen, Brinker said. Metro has a backlog of tens of thousands of unpaid tickets to collect on. The Metro on-street parking schedule will not affect Coral Gables' off-street parking fine schedule which also starts at $1.

Still Small Voice Isn't Conscience, But Machine
Don't think you are going batty if you soon hear voices while entering the City's attendant parking lot on Andalusia Avenue back of Miracle Mile. A new intercom system is being installed to remind drivers to pick up parking checks at the entrance before parking. The system was built by City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr., who is quite a bug with electronic kits.
