Gil Wheeler To Head Gables Seniors

By LEE SANDLER Correspondent Coral Gables High students elected Gil Wheeler president of next year's senior class in a runoff election May 14. Wheeler beat Bill Shanor 481 to 345. For Robin Pyne, Self-Reliant Life

When you talk of self-reliance, think of Robin Pyne, 16. The senior at Coral Gables High-and former Times carrier - cooks his own meals and must look after himself much of the time in his small apartment at 326 Menores Ave. Pyne's father, David Pyne, is a civil engineer who does much of his work in the Bahamas. The boy's mother is always on the move between her Gables apartment and the island. Robin stays here to go to school. "He has to look after himself entirely," explained Mrs. Pyne. "Living alone as he does, he could have gone off the road." But Robin, who was born in London and came to America when he was 11, is doing fine. Honors in both school and sea scouting have come. He's won a scholarship to Vanderbilt University, but has decided to go to Duke University. It's possible he will also win a scholarship there, as well, Mrs. Pyne said. Robin wants to be a civil engineer like his dad. He is a member of the Sea Scout Ship 537. He's chaplain and has won the God and Country Award. This award is given to a Sea Scout who has given a year's work to his church. Robin attends University Baptist Church. When Robin came to Coral Gables, he was found to be so advanced in his studies, he was put into the ninth grade at the age of 11. At Gables High where he's one of its youngest seniors, Robin's a member of the National Honor Society. ROBIN PYNE ...with honor
