Gables Junior Women State's Top Club

Local club women reaped honors at the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs convention in Tampa recently. The Coral Gables Juniors topped 105 other clubs to receive the Mary Clark silver service award as the outstanding junior club in Florida. Coral Gables Senior Club member, Mrs. John Powell, won first place award of $100 for entry in the Vogue Sewing contest. Coco Plum Woman's Club led the senior clubs of the state by receiving five first place awards in the Fine Arts division. Mrs. Robert F. Underwood, of 8501 SW 52nd Ave., placed first in non-fiction, over-all literature, and poetry program. Mrs. Carl Matusek, of 4830 Pine Dr., received first place award for non-fiction short story and honorable in the poetry and children story division. Other awards won by the Coral Gables Juniors included Program and Year Book, first place for clubs over 100 members; Home Life, first place; Youth Conservation, second place. Fine Arts, second place; and history, honorable mention. Four Coral Gables Senior Woman's Club members were named as new Florida Federation chairmen by Mrs. J. R. Glover. Mrs. Gene Gabriel is the new drama chairman; Mrs. William O. Mehrtens, GFWC hostess; Mrs. J. Riley Staats, publicity, and Mrs. M. Lewis Hall, headquarters chairman. Mrs. Hall was retiring state president. Coco Plum took first place in the crafts division for the work it has done with the dependent and delinquent children at Kendall Home. Mrs. John G. Glazier, 1421 Tunis Ave., headed the sewing division and Mrs. Robert W. Anderson, 6200 Leonardo St., headed the arts and crafts section. President of Coco Plum Woman's Club is Mrs. James R. Davant, 1224 Castile Ave. Mrs. Charles O. Burns, welfare chairman of Coco Plum, presented certificates in recognition of appreciation for having given over 100 hours to welfare or community service during the club year to 73 members. The club members have given for 12,000 hours of service this past year. Mrs. Robert L. Greene of 7501 SW 53rd Ct., and a past president, led by giving 789 hours to the American National Red Cross.

Riviera Women Golfers Elect New Officers

The Riviera Women's Golf Association didn't play golf Tuesday. They elected officers instead. Mrs. Thomas J. Bermingham, 630 San Servando Ave., was elected chairman of the association. Mrs. Harry N. Kerr, 1540 Certosa Ave., was elected golf chairman. These two officers will appoint the remaining positions. Also, at the general meeting, the six month Ringer Tournament prizes were given out. Mrs. Billy Harting won low gross in Class A. Mrs. Jack Straessley tied with Mrs. E. H. Foulk for low net in Class A. Mrs. Kerr won low gross and Mrs. Robert Hanna, low net in Class B. Mrs. William Simmons Jr., took low net and Mrs. Dan Costello won low gross in Class C. Next Tuesday, members of the Riviera Golf Association will be playing the Biltmore Golf Club for the ladies day play at the Biltmore course.

Mrs. W. B. Smith To Lead AAUP

The American Association of University Women have announced new officers for a two-year term. They are president, Mrs. W. B. Smith; first vice president, Mrs. George Holland; and treasurer, Miss Bernice Walker.

Jane Vaughn Will Marry R.G. Kelly

MISS VAUGHN Mrs. Elizabeth M. Vaughn, 6914 Mindello St., has announced the engagement of her daughter, Jane Martha, to Robert Garrison Kelly, the son of Mrs. Elizabeth F. Kelly of Coconut Grove. The wedding will be held July 13 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Miss Vaughn was graduated from Coral Gables High in 1960. Mr. Kelly was graduated the year before and is a City of Miami employe.
