Bartle Hits a Home Run

WHEN THE honorable mayor of Kansas City, Roe Bartle, boarded his plane from Miami for home last Friday he had with him one Alexander Palm, w/planter, to take back to KC. The gift was courtesy the Gables Chamber of Commerce, whose officers are shown doing the toting honors. In dark glasses is Robert Hildreth; front left is Lee Smith and on the right is Al Jacobson. And that's his honor bringing up the right rear, with a smile. (Times photo by Raymond Laug) Roe Bartle, a man who obviously loves living, America and Kansas City—in that order — brought his bulk and charm to Coral Gables last week. Charmed were 310 paying guests at a Chamber of Commerce dinner. It was a record turnout at the Gables Country Club for the Chamber's 36th annual fete. Bartle talked for an hour but nobody looked at his watch. The mayor of Kansas City talked seriously; he talked humorously. He bellowed; he talked in normal tones. Chairs weren't scraping and folks weren't coughing. Old folks weren't coughing. Old folks weren't coughing. Old Honorable Mayor H. Roe Bartle had 'em where it counted—in the mind. He called for a "revitalized America. And Lord, please, start with me. "Stand up and be counted," he challenged, "lest we lose the world struggle between Communism and Democracy." It was inspirational, flitting over dozens of subjects. But the intent was serious: get interested in your own community and in your nation. See that worthwhile aims are set up and that they are met. Toastmaster Warner Daniels presented Bartle with a palm tree to take home. And for Mrs. Bartle, who wasn't with the mayor, there was a king-sized jug — more than a gallon — of Arpege scent. Bartle, a cattleman, banker and chain grocer, knew a bargain when offered one and took the palm and the Arpege. Gifts were presented to retiring Chamber President Hamilton Hayes and retiring Retail Merchants Division chairman Sam Miller.
