Gas Company Asks

City Gas Company, of Miami, has asked the City of Coral Gables to grant it a non-exclusive franchise to sell natural gas through system of underground pipes. Joe Dumond, attorney and City of Miami commissioner, has asked to appear before the City Commission to present the firm's proposal. Presently, no firm is authorized to put gas mains here. The City Commission Monday decided to investigate an old ordinance drawn up on a previous request several years ago by another firm to do the same thing. Prime worry of the Commissioners was the tearing up of the Gables' already rough streets. The gas firm has offered six per cent of gross to the City, pay for a referendum election and cost of tearing of streets. Gables also requires utilities to pay a 10 per cent utilities service tax which is passed on to the customer. Taxes are deducted from the six per cent return. City Gas is primarily interested in servicing the Red Road area of Coral Gables leading to the University Miami and South Miami. South Miami held a public hearing on the proposal Tuesday.
