'Physical Fitness' Added To Gables '62 Youth Camp
Physical fitness will be stressed this year at the Coral Gables Youth Camp. Youth Camp, to be held at the Coral Gables Youth Center, 400 Anastasia Ave., will give the campers, "at least an hour a day of tumbling," says Mrs. Jeannette Hunt, director of the summer program. "We're making a game out of the exercises," Mrs. Hunt says. "We'll employ a lot of the old-fashion methods such as walking on stilts, balancing broom sticks to learn coordination, and jumping over a stick which is held with both hands." Campers will also compete in balance walking on low beams — with and without blindfolds. The Summer Day Camp is for the five to 12-year-olds. Registration is now underway. Adults may participate in varied programs such as Spanish, ceramics, East Indian dancing, yoga, bridge, chess, writing, scuba, music and exercises. Fees range from $2 to $9. For children, the program will include crafts, tumbling, field trips, dancing and sports. To participate it isn't necessary to be a member, but it will cost you less if you are. For members, a 9 to 4 p.m. program will be $20 for two weeks and $12 for two weeks of 9 to noon days. Non-members will pay $25 and $14, respectively. A week is five days, Monday through Friday. After 4 p.m., a fee of 50 cents per hour will be charged. Teenagers will have a program consisting of Friday night dances, archery, ceramics, tournaments, judo, fencing, ballroom dancing, modeling, sewing, modern dancing, ballet, skin diving, scuba and photography. The gym at the Youth Center and at Ponce will be open 7-9 p.m. A complete summer program will appear in an advertisement in The Times May 31.
Blue Bridge Up $2,000 Over Bid
Cost of the new Blue Bridge is up about $2,000 because of the need to put in pilings. The cost is now up to $21,779 from the $19,000 contract price. Previous engineering studies by Jorgensen and Schreffler, consulting engineers had not revealed previous dredgings that weakened the rock formation. Atlantic Foundation Co. is the contractor. The firm told the City Commission that they had made test borings along the side of the road, which failed to show up the previous work. Recent construction revealed the weak base, they said. The new bridge, which replaces an unnavigable culvert, will have a clearance of 10 feet. This is eight feet less than the Granada Bridge clearance, but the same as the Ponce de Leon Bridge, which governs the size of boats navigating the waterway, City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said.
ALL-WESLEY CONCERT
On Sunday evening, May 20 combined choirs from Riverside and Wesley Methodist Churches will present an all-Wesley concert. Choral renditions will be conducted by Paul Buckley, Riverside Minister of Music. While the congregational singing will be directed by H. E. Beuteel, director at Wesley. The concert will begin at 7:45 p.m., at Wesley Methodist Church, 133 Ponce de Leon Blvd.

Cost Is Up to $40 for Hour
A time and motion study engineer from the University of Miami counsels dentists, doctors and others who may be worried about socialization of their fields to find efficiencies. Efficiencies — economies, if you will, in time and motion — cut costs, says Dr. J. P. Lesperance. Cost cutting leads to satisfied patients. Satisfied patients lead to non-government intervention, he continued. Dr. Lesperance, director of such a laboratory at UM, spoke Friday to Gables Rotarians at their weekly meeting at the CG Country Club. He gave some statistics on an analysis he has been making of about a dozen area dentists' work habits. The sample is not wide, he noted, and he has not finished correlating his findings. However, this was what he reported to date: Some dentists' break-even figure is as high as $40 an hour. Some are as low as $20. This means before there's any profit, they must take in this much money an hour. "I'm quite convinced if they would make a serious study of efficiency their break-even point could be lower," said the speaker. He blamed lack of planning and inadequate layout as stealing time from dentists. He said his studies show that the dentists spend only 40% of their time on direct patient care. The professor said he was surprised in some 600 samples of patients to find that men are much more fearful in the dentist's chair than women.
