Garden Clubhouse Opposed

(Principals' names listed on page 2) By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter Everything from whisky to tea sipping came up Monday night when those for and against a garden center clubhouse in a Gables residential area appeared before the Zoning Board. The Coral Gables Garden Club, with 287 members, wants the City to rezone a triangular piece of land across the street from the University of Miami. The club wants to build a $100,000 garden center clubhouse. The land is an island which the City has said it will donate to the club. The land is bounded by San Amaro Drive, San Amaro Avenue and San Amaro Court, just off Campo Sano Avenue. The Zoning Board will study the matter and make its ruling, subject to appeal to the City Commission. At any rate, the club does not envision construction for several years. The building is expected to cost $100,000 and the club has cash of about $5,750. Residents in the neighborhood protested to the Zoning Board. The questions they aired during the public discussions at City Hall were? 1. Isn't the Center going greatly to increase traffic and pose a threat to the many children playing in the neighborhood? 2. The proposed auditorium at the Center will hold 500 persons. The paved parking lot will hold 45 cars. Where will people park if more than 45 turn out at any one time? 3. It may be a garden center, but will it have a liquor license? If the answer is Yes, will the Garden Club allow groups to hold large parties and weddings at the Center? "I'd like to go to the heart of the issue," said the main speaker for those against the (See NEIGHBORS, page 2)

Shades of the '20's Athenian Moustache

THE 1920's THE 1950's LATE MAY, 1962 When Dr. Jay F. W. Pearson returned to the University of Miami recently after a five-week tour of Europe he brought back a moustache—"it was my wife's idea." It would take a pretty lengthy memory to recall last seeing Dr. Pearson in a moustache for that was in the 1920's, when he was in his 20's. We reproduce a picture at left to show what that was like. Why a moustache now? "I needed something new as chancellor," quipped the man who takes on that post July 1. "I was thinking of growing a mandarin and clipping it off at the bottom." He added the moustache, he said, while in Athens, Greece. "My wife likes it. But my secretary, she was astounded."

Head Shaking Follows Use by Mayor Of Chamber, Methodist Private Mail List

(For developments on another political front, see page 3) The private mailing lists of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and the First Methodist Church were used in the campaign of Mayor Robert Searle for State Democratic Committeeman. Neither institution gave permission, according to officials there. Searle lost, finishing fourth in the race in Tuesday's balloting. James James was the winner. Dr. John H. Hanger, pastor of First Methodist, said it takes action by the church's board of stewards to use the church's list. "Our policy is not to make it available," said the minister of the church of which Mayor Searle is a member. Dr. Hanger did not know the list had been used but said if it had he was "sure nothing wrong was intended." He said Metro Judge Jack Turner, also a First Methodist member, had asked permission to use the list but that he, Dr. Hanger, had declined. Judge Turner lost Tuesday. Mayor Searle told The Times he got an okay from the chairman of the church's Board of Stewards. The church has 3,890 members. As for the Chamber's 583-name mailing list, the Mayor said: "It must have been used. I don't know where it came from." Chamber officials have talked to the Mayor about the matter. The plates are kept locked at the Chamber of Commerce offices, 50 Aragon Ave. No one in the Chamber knows how the plates got out of the office and back in again. The chamber will not make its list available for political use under any circumstances. The Chamber's Board of Directors is to hear about the matter tonight (Thursday). MAYOR SEARLE ... on the list

Brake Goes With Metro By 10-6 Edge

Young Gables attorney Robert Brake, in his first try for public office, was elected to the Metro Commission Tuesday by defeating Mary Ann MacKenzie, 10,456 to 6,569. Brake carried all but three of the 52 precincts in the district — one in the Grove, one by the Miami River and Mrs. MacKenzie's own Key Biscayne. His vote in the Gables' nine precincts which are in Metro District 1 was 2,026 to 1,144. He will represent District 1. He joins another townsman on the commission, Winston Wynne. In a contest which pitted two Gables residents against one another (Brake's opponent is from Key Biscayne), Judge Ralph O. Cullen defeated Senior Metro Judge Jack M. Turner. They were both seeking a circuit judgeship. Cullen had 36,602 to Turner's 35,394. Cullen lives at 3405 Banos Ct.; Turner at 420 Sunset Rd. Brake's residence is 451 Majorca Ave. Another Gableite running was Mayor Robert Searle. He sought the highest Democratic party elective office in the county, that as a Dade delegate to the State Democratic Executive Committee. He ran fourth, polling 8,372 votes. The winner's total was 11,917.
