Midshipman Magruder

Mr. and Mrs. Peyton M. Magruder of 757 Malaga Ave. are leaving this week for Annapolis, Md., to spend June week with their son, Midshipman First Class Marshall Magruder who will graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy June 6. Graduation follows the "June week" festivities. While at the Naval Academy, Marshall participated in varsity swimming, water polo, and was a member of the Foreign Relations Club. Upon graduation Midshipman Magruder will receive a Bachelor of Science degree and be commissioned an ensign in the Navy. He is to report to Villefrance, France for duty aboard the guided missile cruiser USS Springfield, operating with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, following his leave which he will spend in the Gables during the month of June. * * * First Lieut. Charles W. Conner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Conner, 1147 Venetia Ave., is serving with the Marine Aircraft Group of 16 aboard the anti-submarine warfare support aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, a unit which participated in the recovery operations of the "Project Mercury" orbital flight May 24. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Donald J. Simmons and their four children of Clearwater, are visiting Mrs. Simmons' mother, Mrs. Roy Cotter, 16 Marabella Ave. * * * David Gordon Pettigrew, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Pettigrew, of 808 Mariana Ave., is leaving June 11th for Camp Wingman in Avon Park. * * * Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Pellman of 528 Luenga Ave., had as their weekend house guests, Mr. Pellman's sister, Mrs. Catherine Boex, and Mrs. Mary Lu Kruese, of Cincinnati, Ohio. * * * Richard Barry Bermont, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter L. Bermont, 609 Cadagua Ave., is one of 700 candidates at the University of Texas, Austin, scheduled to receive a BA degree in the College of Arts and Sciences Saturday. * * * Office equipment merchant Carl Libby is bound for New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco areas. Libby was scheduled to leave Friday for New York and later for Los Angeles, where he will represent the Coconut Grove Rotary at the Rotary convention. Later he will round out the 10-day trip by visiting his brother, Vernon A. Libby, general manager of the Better Business Bureau in San Francisco. * * * Mrs. Julian J. Eberle of 1019 Mariana Ave. received the alumni award for outstanding achievement from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee. Mrs. Eberle has also completed two terms as president of the diocesan council of Catholic Women. * * * Mrs. Theo A. Bell of 1115 Milan Ave. has returned from Baton Rouge, La., where she visited her son, T. A. Bell Jr. and Mrs. Bell and their three children.

Mrs. Palmer New Club President

Mrs. Alfred Palmer was recently installed as president of St. Brendan's Woman's Club. Also installed were Mrs. Arthur Harlan, first vice president; Mrs. Nathan Passmore, second vice president; Mrs. John Minger, secretary; Mrs. John Bow, corresponding secretary; and Mrs. Jack Drewett, treasurer. Father N. Fogarty presided at the installation. A social followed at the school hall.

Costello's 68 Wins Play

Riviera Country Club Women's Golf Association played Miami Country Club course Tuesday due to their own links still unavailable, and the tournament was low net. Mrs. Ben Costello won with a 68. Mrs. Stephen B. Gibbs was second with a 71. A two-way tie for third was won by Mrs. Carl H. Blohm and Mrs. Fay Britt who shot a 72. The North Dade Country Club also showed the Riviera Country Club women golfers interest by inviting them to play on Friday. The tournament was low net on a 75 par course and Mrs. John W. Campbell won with a 71.
