Meters Are Not Missed in S. Miami

By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter A spot check of downtown South Miami merchants indicates they oppose 3-1 the return of metered, on-street parking. The survey, being conducted by the South Miami Chamber of Commerce at the request of the City Council, is not expected to be completed until later, but the wide margin revealed in checks made by Chamber Manager H. W. MacDonald and The Times last week indicates an overwhelming sentiment against returning the meters. The survey was touched off by the City Council eager to find ways to recoup some revenue dropped last year. Commissioners estimate an additional $10,000 gross would be realized from the meters. Of 26 businesses surveyed, 17 said they were definitely against meters, five said they wanted them back and four gave answers that were noncommital or inappropriate. One point that both the pro-meter and anti-meter merchants were generally agreed on: South Miami police are not enforcing the time limits as strictly as they were when meters were being used. This has caused some abuses such as all-day parking by some, long overdue parking by others and use of available space for employe parking rather than for customers. Police have been marking tires since meter heads were removed last year. The survey also revealed some interesting information. One merchant pointed to a vehicle parked in front of his establishment. It belonged to the merchant next door who had complained about persons parking all day in front of his store. Virtually all those who favored a return of meters were on Red Road or near the intersection of Red Road and Sunset Drive. Only one merchant on South Dixie Highway wanted them. One South Dixie Highway gas station operator Jack Lynn, 5700 South Dixie Hwy., wanted parking on the highway removed altogether because it presented a hazard to driving. Most outspoken advocate of metered parking was Daniel Meretsky, owner of Judi Leslie at 7250 and 7214 Red Road. "Let's put them in where merchants feel they're needed," said Meretsky. "What they're doing is parking all day," he said. The argument against meters was best articulated by Louis Kirk, owner of Pilgrim specialty store at 5830 South Dixie Hwy. Kirk went into a long dissertation about the peace of mind by meterless and a town converted into a shopping center. Incidentally, Kirk is moving to Dadeland when that opens up. Here are other comments by South Miami merchants on the absence meters: "I think people are happier about it" — Louis Klaff, manager of Howie Tackle King, 5736 South Dixie Hwy. "I think it has helped" — Edna Hunter, assistant to the manager of Holsum Restaurant, 5750 South Dixie Hwy. "Little if any change in our particular case" — Fred Howsare, manager of Goodyear Service Store, 5814 South Dixie Hwy. "It's been convenient," — Greg Miller, manager of Miller Glass, 5818 South Dixie Hwy. "I think its the greatest thing South Miami has ever had," — Helen Miller, owner of Helen Miller, 5824 South Dixie Hwy. "I can see no effect . . . But I don't have any transient trade" — Bill Spitzer, owner of Independent Air Conditioning 5870 South Dixie Hwy. "I think it's had a healthy effect as far as people are concerned," — Vernon Jennings, owner of Hollock and Jennings. "It's like advertising. You never know how much it helps, yet you know it helps" — Hugh Bennett, MacDonald Cleaners, 5850 South Dixie Hwy. "Put 'em back . . . Too many people have abused the — thing" — Steve Simonds, Town and Country Pastries, 7222 Red Road. "I'd say that the meters should stay off" — Martin Hochman, Zipp Sporting Goods Inc. "I'm against them" — Anita Reynolds, Anita Reynolds, 5814 Sunset Dr. "It doesn't make any difference," Allan F. Kaufman, 5802 Sunset Dr.
