City Wary of Giving Figures

(Editorial on page 4) A request for information about the City's recreation concessions by the Recreation Advisory Board rubbed some members of the City Commission the wrong way Tuesday. Before they would authorize City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. to give out the information they would like to know why the board wants the information. The requests for the information were triggered by board member Bernard B. Weksler. Chairman Larry Adams requested that the city manager and Mrs. Jeannette Hunt, director of the Youth Center, advise the board on "questionable items." William Kerdyk requested a report on the income and profit of all golf courses over the past 10 years. Weksler's request for information was broader. He sought to know: The gross income expenses and net income from all concessions at recreational facilities... The time spent by City employes by managing and operating concessions... Whether or not it would be advisable to have competitive bidding for any, or all of the concessions. The estimated income to be realized by the City by its operation of any, or all of the existing concessions and recreational facilities. If salaries in the new budget contemplate increases and if the proposed salaries are in accord and satisfactory without the concession income. Weksler and Commissioner Franklin Evans have tangled frequently on various matters, and it was Evans who hit the request of the Board the hardest. It was he who suggested the request be turned back for an answer on its motivation. Weksler has claimed in the past that deficity recreational activities could be put in the black if concessions were operated by the City rather than by paid employes operating the concessions.
