'Essay' On Teen Drinking
Continued from Page 4 were told and not to question their parents counseling. Today's youngsters, however, are being trained to think more and more for themselves, and the above quoted spiel from parents just isn't going to sink into this type of conditioning. Could you parents picture your country clubs or your private parties being successes without the presence of alcohol? These situations are witnessed every day of the year by your teenagers. It might be slightly cruel to adopt, universally, the definition which some sociologists have of an alcoholic, that being anyone who in any slightest way depends on the use of alcohol. Yet probably millions of people every day, reach for spirits of some type as soon as they arrive home from work, if they haven't already had one or two in the club car of the 5:15 commuter. It would really hurt to be one of these people and be forced to call yourself an alcoholic. Yet every day, your children see you sipping your cocktails and don't think their curiosity doesn't abound. Why, if they are to act grown-up, aren't they included in this evening ritual? The result is experimentation when they get together in their own circles, whether or not this is a senior prom or a camping trip is a moot point. The fact is, that although you may alleviate the situation somewhat by complaining to the authorities for stronger law enforcement, the real crux of the problem lies right where you are afraid to admit, your own home. After all, the kids are yours, not those of the school principal or the police. Isn't it sort of admitting defeat to go running to these people when problems like this crop up? Proper understanding of the disadvantages and advantages (if there by any) of alcoholic beverages, it seems would be more useful than to have a militia of police watching your children for you to see that they don't pull out a hip flask at a school dance. If you are afraid that your children will be ostracized if you forbid them to associate with drinking contemporaries, get together with other parents and discuss the problem, and also, take a good look at the example you are setting.
