Grads Told 'Take High Road'
"What Difference Does It Make?" Dr. Fred E. Cole, president of the Coral Gables Ministerial Association, asked graduating seniors at Coral Gables High School Sunday Night. The 850 students gathered to hear Dr. Cole's address at the Baccalaureate service conducted by the Association in cooperation with the school. "What difference does it make if you keep on learning, growing, developing mentally ... if you are good citizens or not ... if you are a religious or nonreligious person?" he asked. "I am convinced that much of your future and mine will depend upon how we think of these questions and answer them in critical areas." The point of achievement of graduation is "only a beginning," he said, "but in some respects you have an almost impossible starting place. "You are inheriting a world of incredible power which if rightly used could make of this world a veritable Kingdom of God ... But you are also inheriting a world of hatred and fear and tyranny; a world of power blocs set over against each other in seemi ngly uncompromising terms, ready to explode dome in a second's notice." "What will you do with this world? ... you will do with it what you do with yourselves," he said. "The primary question therefore in not 'What difference does it make?', but 'What difference will you make?' " "If you keep on growing, learning, maturing, pioneering, if you make maturity, not money your goal; ability not cheap fame; consecration to great things, not easy vice, then the future can but hold the key answers for you." Also participating in the service were Principal Harry Rath, officers of the senior class, Dr. John Hanger, of the First Methodist Church of Coral Gables; the Rev. John G. Shirley, rector of St. Phillips Episcopal Church; Dr. Ladislau Biro, The Coral Gables Baptist Church; Rabbi Mordecai Podet, Temple Judea; and the Coral Gables High School Chorus.
