Gentlemen Agree: Arden's Awning OK

"A gentleman's agreement" finally got Don Arden permission to errect an awning over his Don Arden's Casa and ended a 15 month feud with the city, the county, and the State Road Department. The suit Arden filed "never even got into court, but it came pretty close," Arden said. The whole issue started when Troup Bros. finished widening LeJeune Road in front of Arden's Casa bar, 4521 LeJeune, and declared the over-hanging awning a hazard. Arden was given 10 days to take the awning down so he filed for a temporary injunction. It lasted five months. Letters and phone calls to various divisions and departments of the city, county, and state produced no results. Finally on the morning the case was scheduled for trial, a representative of the County Right of Way Department approached Arden and the issue was settled out of court. He has been given permission to put up an awning seven feet high and one foot from the curb. He also was given a letter guaranteeing that if the awning fit the specifications agreed upon, he would not be "bothered by anyone" from the city, the county, or the state. "None of the money involved in the litigation was returned," said Arden, "but I got some satisfaction from the deal." He is now in the process of getting estimates on the awning.

FEC is Busy, Busy; Le Jeune Signals Wait

The Florida East Coast has things to do more important than the completion of the railway crossing at LeJeune Road and Grand Avenue, City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr., said Tuesday. "I wrote to their main office in St. Augustine some weeks ago and was advised that the delay was due to projects other than this with high-er priority. "I know that the City has the $11,000 to pay 'em," he said, "whenever they get around to it." The City has agreed to finance the work on the crossing at LeJeune and Grand Ave., but the other crossing at the Highway is being taken care of under an agreement between the F.E.C., the State Road Department, and the county. When? Nobody knows.

Lions Elect New Officers

JACK WASHER Jack Washer will be installed as new president of the Coral Gables Lions Club July 1. He'll replace Bill May. Other officers are: Vice presidents F. B. Rolfes and T. E. Carter; treasurer, T. C. Blount; secretary, Ray Collette; lion tamer, Bent Kaaber. Elected to the Board of Directors were Ed Thompson, Herbert Morris, George Gabler and E. Lewallen.

New Library May Add 3rd Story

The new municipal library will be designed with an eye toward adding a third story later, its designer, Ed Rempe said this week. A model of the two-story edifice is being made and will be presented to the City Commission for their reaction shortly, Rempe said. Location of the nearly half-million dollar library has been set for a tract immediately west of City Hall.
