Gableites Take 3 Out of 4 Dade Democratic Posts

William C. Martin, Barbara Miner, and George Wilson, all Coral Gables residents, were elected to three out of the four top offices of the Dade County Democratic Executive Committee in the second Primary here May 29. "We do not want it said that Coral Gables tried to run away with the show however," said Martin, the newly elected chairman. "We readily recognize that this happened only with the help and backing of all areas of the county." Martin, a former president of the Dade County Bar Association, ran unsuccessfully for the position of chairman four years ago, missing election by only two votes. He enters the office with a long record of civic and political activity. For eight years he was an administrative assistant to Congress in Washington. Last year he was nominated "Dade's Most Outstanding Citizen" for his efforts towards the prevention of juvenile delinquency. He was campaign coordinator for Dante Fascell in the last election and served on the Democratic Finance Committee. A native of Alabama, Martin has spent most of his 50 years in Florida and Washington, D.C. He attended the University of Florida and received his Bachelor's degree in Government at George Washington University, as well as his Bachelor of Law and Doctorate of Juridical Science. He did post-graduate work at the University of Miami and is a member of the U.M. Board of Governors. Martin has been a member of the Democratic Steering Committee for Dade County for the last 12 years. Barbara (Mrs. Floyd) Miner, 1715 Granada Blvd., runner-up in the race for State Committeewoman, was elected vice chairman. She served on the Ways and Means Committee last term. Active in many facets of both civic and political realms, Mrs. Miner said, "I have worked my way up through the ranks of the party gradually. I feel very strongly that this committee has an opportunity for strength and effectiveness it has not had for a long time." Wilson, a Gables city commissioner, is the new treasurer of the group. Wilson has been a prominent figure in government and community work in the Gables. Seventy-one of the 80 positions in the county party machine were elected in the primary. The remaining vacancies will be filled by Executive Committee appointment within the next few weeks, Martin said. With four of Dade's 40 districts covering Coral Gables, the city will have 10 of the committee's 80 votes. The votes are apportioned among the 80 representatives or committeemen and women elected from each of the 40 districts. Districts 27, 30, 31, and 34 are contained within, or are adjacent to Coral Gables. Committeeman and committeewoman from District 27 are Martin and Mrs. Miner. District 30 is represented by Branch Paxton with the position of committeewoman vacant, and District 31 by brothers Robert C. Hartnett and John L. Hartnett. Their father, Fred Hartnett, is former Chairman of the committee. Wilson is the committeeman for District 34, and the committeewoman's position for that district is vacant.
