We Reach For Stars, Yet Fail On Earth, UM Grads Told

Dodging responsibility is one of the great defects of our times, William A. Patterson, president of United Air Lines told the second largest class to be graduated from the University of Miami Tuesday night. Patterson spoke at commencement ceremonies for 1,008 graduates at the Miami Beach Convention Hall. He was being cited for "his sound leadership and the application of his great energy to the highest levels of American enterprise, both civic and industrial," by U.M. and received an honorary doctor of laws degree. Senator Spessard Holland was also cited at the same ceremonies for "statesmanlike qualities exhibited through the many years of his faithful and valuable public service." The dodging of responsibility, the native of Honolulu said, is reflected in things large and small. "Far too many are contributing less than what our society has a right to expect from them in their jobs, their community life, and as members of the human race," said Patterson. "In defending their inadequate contributions, some say, 'What do I owe society? It's never done anything for me.'" Patterson took a shot at irresponsible beatniks. While recognizing their right not to conform he said this: "Most disturbing about beatniks, to my mind, is the fact that they have elevated irresponsibility into a way of life. Like children who hide under the covers when storms threaten, they have worked up a mummery to ward off the duties and discipline of adult life." But Patterson was worried about another type of beatnik too. "This is the more conventional type of beatnik who dresses and speaks like everyone else but who are committed to the philosophy of assuming an irreducible minimum of adult responsibility, he said. "Tell this kind of person there are cracks in the social structure and he is not alarmed. Give him evidence of political corruption and he is not aroused. Point to injustice and he is placid. Speak of crime, disease and blight-and he is unmoved. He simply shrugs off anything that doesn't interfere with his creature comforts and the regularity of his paychecks," Patterson said. This type of beatnik doesn't care whether free enterprise or the public treasury pays him, his elected officials represent him wisely or foolishly, whether our foreign aid program is a mistake or a necessity, moral standards rise or fall, or whether there are Communists in China or in Cuba. "He just doesn't care," said Patterson, who added that he cared and that everybody loses when no one does. The best way to avoid government encroachment, he said later, is run business in a responsible manner. And the chief failure of his generation — human relationships. "Our inventors have been able to build machines that are reaching out to the stars but there is still no machine to control hate, envy and violence between persons, groups and nations," said Patterson. "You will find, as I have found, that next to spiritual faith, the daily acceptance of responsibility is good for the mind, good for the body. And beyond that, it will be good for this nation in times to come," he concluded.

BEST OPERATED SEWERAGE TREATMENT PLANT

in Florida. That's what the Florida State Board of Health said this week when it gave first place (for the third time) to Coral Gables. From the left, holding laboratory vials are, chemist Everett Kinloch, superintendent Bill Tims, and chief operator Michael Zella. The plant is on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, across from the railroad tracks and near the University of Miami's baseball diamond.

May Construction Total Drops

Coral Gables construction — running well ahead of last year for the first four months — fell behind for the first time in May. The reason? A large portion of the $3.5 million Otto G. Richter Library at the University of Miami was started in May last year to give lagging construction totals a big boost. The five-month total for this year stands at $4,634,096 compared to $5,450,903 last year at this time. For four months, the total stood at $3,393,184 — considerably more than $2,829,282 recorded for the same period last year. The building picture is expected to brighten again, however, when permits are issued for the Holiday Inn Hotel and the Gulf Oil Building. The May total was $1,240,911 compared to $2,621,621 last year. Largest permit to be issued among 253, was the one for the Publix Supermarket at 6600 Nervia St., $344,355. Two other large permits went to G. I. Salzman for a $115,000 16-unit apartment at 125 Edgewater Dr., and to Porfiri Construction Co., for a 12-unit, $116,000 apartment at 216 Calabria Ave. Miscellaneous permits — 226 for $154,636 — made up the bulk of construction activity in May. One other apartment permit was issued for a total in that category of $281,000. Seven residences were started, $209,770; four alterations, $82,500; four additions, $71,400; one foundation, $50,000; five pools, $21,500 one store, $18,000; and one bulkhead and dock $7,750.
