Backers of Seven Gables Hotel Fail Again to Get City Approval
Backers of the proposed Seven Gables Hotel on Coral Way were turned down Tuesday on their request for a rehearing of their case by the City Commission. The Commission indicated an informal conference would put them "on the spot." In a letter to the Commission, attorneys for Seven Gables owners, Robert Sullivan and Eugene Wilhelm, said they had completed negotiations to buy additional land which would enable them to furnish an additional 70 to 100 parking spaces. They also said that revision of their parking layout would increase immediately adjacent parking to a total of 89 spaces. This additional information, they said, should entitle them to a new hearing on the matter, as well as an informal conference preceding it. The Commission didn't think so. At the beginning of the discussion, they indicated that they would not be inclined to grant a rehearing on the basis of the additional information. They did not think it provided adequate justification for one. They were not adverse to an informal conference with the proponents however, until Commissioner Franklin Evans suggested that there was no point in continuing the discussion any further because the Commission knew that they would not approve plans for the hotel. "It would put us on the spot," said Evans. "We would be put in the position of making suggestions that if followed we would only have to turn down ourselves." A move to deny passed. The commission voted against the $1.1 million, 102 room hotel at the first public hearing July 7, when it was made apparent that property owners near the area did not favor it. Reasons cited for the opposition included extension of commercialization along Coral Way, inadequate parking, noise utility taxes, and lack of need. Also cited was opposition to the issuing of a liquor license, for which the 102 rooms would qualify the hotel. The vote was four against with Commissioner Joe Murphy abstaining because his law partner Edmund Russo represented proponents of the hotel. Both the Chamber of Commerce and the Miracle Mile Merchants Association have taken action in support of the hotel.

He Heads Business Pollsters
Rodney W. Vestal, 1550 S. Dixie Hwy., has been appointed district chairman of the National Federation of Independent Business for members in the Southwest district comprising mainly Coral Gables and South Miami. He is the 16th chairman in this area. The largest organization of its kind in the country, the Federation issues to its members a monthly bulletin called the Mandate, listing four or five of the more important bills pending before Congress. Members vote upon the bills, expressing their opinion for or against, and mail the ballots to their district chairmen, who tabulates them. The chairman then sends the tabulation and ballots to his congressman and an identical tabulation with ballots to the state senator. Through approximately 3,000 chairmen throughout the United States, the non-partisan Federation compiles a nationwide summary which is reported to congressional and state level representatives. Chairmen in the Dade area include Judge Irving Yelen, Harvey R. Klein, Thomas A. Horkan Jr., Leonard P. Cardone, R. L. Edgar, George H. Light, Glenn B. Smith, J. H. Loverin, Hugh R. Wilson, John L. Ricciardelli, Fred E. Gowing, Clarence C. Morris, Jerome D. Carty, Samuel Feldman, and R. H. Higgins. Jack Clark, 6270 SW 20 Ter., WVCG Sunday Symphony commentator, is the district manager for Federation in Dade County. RODNEY W. VESTAL JACK CLARK

"Not a trace of shabbiness can be found anywhere on the car,"
© 1962 VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC. "Not a trace of shabbiness can be found anywhere on the car," says Road & Track magazine. The people at Road & Track get to drive some pretty exotic cars. So when they come out and say that "the Volkswagen's finish is unbelievable," we take it as quite a compliment. Mind you, they didn't say, "At the price." Just "unbelievable." Period. Frankly, the Volkswagen people are not surprised. After 15 years of improving and refining their one basic model, the surprise would be if it weren't as good as it is. Volkswagen parts fit each other so well, the car is practically airtight. If you stripped a VW to its skin, you'd find it completely painted, inside and out. (And not with one coat or two. Four.) Volkswagen puts as much effort into the glove compartment door as the front door. They run in every engine before it's installed, they check every windshield. Road & Track wound up by saying, "Overall, the VW is so good, it leaves us a bit short of anything to say." Enough said. MONARCH MOTORS, INC. AUTHORIZED DEALER 3650 Bird Road at U.S. No. 1 HI 6-0812
