WE'LL SOON FIND OUT Incinerator Fallout Fixed, They Hope

Miami officials are keeping their fingers crossed that their incinerator in Coconut Grove will emit nothing but clean smoke after $20,000 worth of modifications are completed there in the next few weeks. Smoke and soot from the incinerator led to neighborhood complaints and a lawsuit from Coral Gables. "I think we're getting along all right," said Assistant Miami City Manager Paul Andrews. But Andrews was not predicting any flawless operation now. Cautiously guarding his words, he compared the changes to putting in a new carburetor in a car. While the carburetor itself may work fine, he said, other changes may be needed before it works as designed. Miami officials have been chided about their "Cadillac class" incinerator that was billed as "odorless, smokeless and soot free," only to create more fuss than the old incinerator ever did. Testing of new system just began, Andrews said, and he indicated it may be some time before the cure is made permanent. Meanwhile, he said, complaints have tapered off, but Miami has received calls even while the incinerator was shut down.

Unintentional Times Want Ad Pulls Big

The price tag on five lots on the south side of Aragon Avenue is $75,000, Charles Taylor, representative for the owner, Ellveeay Corp., said this week. A Times story last week set a $50,000 ticket on the lots at 342 to 348 Aragon Ave. The figure was used during a City Commission conference discussion of the proposal. But this turned out to be what the City paid for similar property on the same street. Four persons offered $50,000 after reading last week's Times, Taylor said. Ellveeay paid $65,000 earlier this year for the property, although tax stamps indicated a $60,000 sales figure, said Taylor. Last week, the City decided it couldn't afford the offer and countered with an offer to use the land for municipal parking under the Zain Plan. This is a tax forgiveness agreement in exchange for use of the land for parking, coupled with a 90-day cancellation clause. Under the Zain arrangement, the City improves the property, meters it, and returns to the owner 35% of the revenue. Taylor said Finance Director Kenneth Allyn has been asked to come up with projected revenue figures on the proposed arrangement which Taylor will relay to the owners. What about parking spaces for tenants of Ellveeay Corp.'s new three-story building on Miracle Mile at Salzedo Street? "That's a good question," said Taylor. Obviously, he said, the firm would have made other arrangements for parking. Then why sell? The firm was not realizing a return on its investment, said Taylor, and the need for parking for tenants was not great enough to warrant retaining the land.

CAR DEMOLISHED

An Air Force man, Joseph Fedelin, 19, 334 NW 34th Ave., was treated for nose and knee injuries at Doctors' Hospital Sunday afternoon when his car was demolished against a utility pole. Two other companions were unhurt. The airman's car was southbound on South Dixie Highway at Ponce de Leon Boulevard. No charges were filed.

SENTENCED

Ukel Burrows, 218 Grand Ave., was sentenced to 45 days in City Jail last week on conviction of molesting a child. Burrows had been charged with lewd and lascivious conduct and assault on a minor, but the charge was changed by the City to fondling a child.

Methodists Add Building

The congregation of South Miami Methodist Church has authorized a new $350,000 church sanctuary with a meeting capacity of 800, according to the Rev. Dr. Ralph B. Huston pastor. Chairman Edward G. Harris of the Building Committe plans to mortgage up to $250,000 of the cost. The commitment will probably be signed at the end of this week and he hopes that ground will be broken within a month, says the pastor.

Sunrise Parking

Sunrise Harbour developer Emil Gould got a 3-2 nod from the City Commission Tuesday for underground or in-building parking on six Edgewater Drive lots. Gould had previously received a 4-1 okay from the Zoning Board on the same proposal. The Sunrise Harbour owner had been restricted to parking in front of the building. Tuesday's City Commission action will not prohibit Gould from continuing to plan for front parking. The six lots are lots 2 through 7 in Block. Mayor Robert L. Searle and Commissioner George Wilson voted for Commissioner C. L. Dressel's motion to grant the proposal. Commissioners Franklin Evans and Joe Murphy said the move was premature because the Sunrise Harbour area was just last week turned over to the Planning Board for study after a meeting with the Sunrise Harbour Association. No objections had been received on the plan.
