Pearson Honored; Gives in Return
(Continued from Page 1) "It's high time I had an opportunity to say it to the people of Coral Gables and it's a pleasure. "The City of Coral Gables has stood by this University year after year after year. Every year it has given $25,000 to the University. "There were times when the money from the City was the only cash the University had. There were other times when the City Commission, stretching a point perhaps, advanced us their contribution to enable the University to go on. "The City of Coral Gables is the guarantee of this University's future. Had the University of Miami begun its main operations anywhere else in Dade County than in this City, I do not believe it would be here today." The 85 guests applauded as he sat down. Dr. Pearson has been with the University since 1926. Dr. Stanford, who succeeds him as president, also spoke briefly. The party had cocktails followed by steaks. A trio played dinner music. The Cone home backs up to the Riviera golf course. A large, fringed tent protected the party in case of rainy weather. For the most part, the full moon was out but just as the festivities' end a light shower passed over. The University Committee of the Chamber, under the chairmanship of Ed Crowley, put on the affair. Besides the two principals, other guests were the Administration and deans of the University and the City Commission. Attending were: Dr. and Mrs. Pearson, Dr. and Mrs. Sanford, Mayor and Mrs. Searle, Mr. Crowley and Mrs. Mary Louise Dunwoody, Mrs. Cone, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jacobson. Vice Mayor and Mrs. George Wilson, Dean May Brunson, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Rolfe Neill. Commissioner and Mrs. Joe Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hildreth, Dr. and Mrs. Irving Muskat, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Greer. Final Count At UM Is Lower Still
University of Miami enrollment for the fall semester totalled 13,764 students as of Oct. 10, according to figures released by Registrar Keith W. Smith. There are 8,865 students registered in day classes, 4,899 in evening classes under the Division of Continuing Studies. According to Dr. Smith, final registration figures will increase as in-service teachers and others register for special classes and short-term workshops. Comparative figures of last fall, as of Nov. 17—a month later—are as follows: total enrollment, 14,419; day, 9,558; evening, 4,861. The decrease of some 655 students, including 642 freshmen, is attributed in part to the adherence to higher standards by the admissions committee. The application rejection rate this year was 24% as compared with 13% last year. Earlier, it was predicted enrollment would be off by 500 students.
Garbage Driver Hurt in Wreck

According to Officer Charles Harris, neither the driver of the car, Lucille Dubois, 24, 423 Palermo Ave., or Dammas saw one another because of a large hibiscus bush as the women was driving in from of 220 Sarto Ave. No charges were filed.
