Civitans Gather Here, Chart Yule Cake Sale
Civitans of Area 3—125 of them—met at the Coral Gables Country Club Friday and Saturday to chart their courses in the coming months and relax. They are greeted by Mayor Robert L. Searle and Stan Shaffer, president of the Coral Gables club. One of the big items on their business agenda was their annual fruit cake sale—the principal source of revenue for the Civitans' charities projects. According to Richard Bindinger, immediate past president, Florida Civitans raised $500,000 last year from fruit cake sales at $1 a pound. Between 25,000 and 30,000 pounds was sold in this area, Bindinger said. The money helps support the Civitans' Junior Achievement Award, a children's hospital, children's school and eight "D" League youngsters baseball teams. Also present at the two day sessins was Wyatt Johnson, international director of membership who lives at 1015 Anastatia Ave. and Orville Haller, deputy governor of Area 3 from Homestead. Area 3 stretches from Key West to Fort Pierce.
'Cast Out the Beam in Thine Own Eye...'
A Gables woman who dragged a neighboring property owner into Municipal Court recently on charges of having an illegal fence finds herself in the same predicament on a charge of having an illegal wall. Dr. Margeurite Krausz, 920 El Rado St., had Jose Manuel Muxo Jr., 9000 SW 176th St., owner of property at 916 El Rado St., brought into Court back in March for having an unpermitted chain link fence, now she is in legal turmoil in a battle of tit for tat. The trouble with Dr. Krausz' wall is that it is unstuccoed and in the Gables this is not permitted. On Aug. 7, Judge Charles Spooner postponed final disposition of the case until the defendant had the wall stuccoed. This Dr. Krausz has failed to do and the City's patience is running out. Meanwhile Muxo took down his link fence, but not after more prodding from Dr. Krausz and the City after he had been in Court and lost an appeal before the City Commission.

Jaycees Out Looking For A New Home
Coral Gables Jaycees are shopping around for a bigger and better building for meeting place. Terry Tumlin Jr., president, said Tuesday that plans to establish a club house that would be shared by other groups at Granada Golf Course are still alive. Last week, City commissioners turned down the Jaycees on a plan to move a building from Palm Island which had been given to them after City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. recommended edniai. The building, since torn down, was ruled too small. Jaycees seek to put the building in the vicinity of the Boy Scout Building near the intersection of Coral Way and South Greenway Drive.

Back in Ben Franklin's Time...
... producing a newspaper was most often a relatively simple, one-man operation. Materials, as well as methods, bore only the faintest resemblance to those used in our modern newspaper industry. Today, we sometimes take our newspapers for granted, forgetting the enormous efforts that make them possible — the many talented people necessary to write and edit them; the vast news-gathering networks; the printing techniques and complex equipment developed over the years. On this, the occasion of National Newspaper Week, Southern Bell is happy to join with others throughout the country in honoring our great and growing newspaper industry.
