We’re Making Eyes At Uncle Sam’s $$

By MAURICE LABELLE Times Reporter Coral Gables has reversed a long standing policy of opposing Federal Aid for municipal projects. City Commissioners lifted the taboo last week when they authorized Finance Director Kenneth Allyn to seek Federal funds for three proposed projects — the library, SS-8 sanitary sewer district and a multi-purpose auditorium. "You begin to wonder if you are not a sucker not to take advantage of it," Mayor Robert L. Searle said Tuesday in change of heart. Searle, formerly adamantly opposed to use of Federal funds because of the strings sometimes attached, pointed out these funds would come with no strings. The proposed library, with a price tag of, between $400,000 and $450,000, could receive between $200,000 and $225,000 from Uncle Sam from the program to stimulate the economy of certain areas. SS-8, a $320,000 project, would also be financed 50-50 with local and Federal funds. No price tag has been placed on the auditorium, and the University of Miami might participate. Commissioners Joe Murphy and George Wilson echoed the mayor's sentiments. "It's ridiculous not to take it," said Murphy. Local money is being siphoned off to help other areas when the money is needed here, Murphy said. Wilson had regrets about the change, but he saw the City caught in a web it couldn't get out of otherwise. "We're saddled with expenditures of other areas," said Wilson. He said his children and children's children would pay for it, but he saw no way out under the present circumstances. Virtually every municipality in the area and many others in the nation are vying for the same funds, whose availability nowhere near matches the demand.

Library Decision

The City Commission, split 3-2 on the Le Jeune Road site for the proposed library, has put the subject back on the agenda for next Tuesday's meeting. The Commission indicated at Friday's conference that they would await the results of that meeting before taking any further action on acquisition of a site. Although not billed as a public hearing, interested persons are expected to appear and voice their views. If the site is picked, the Commission will have to resolve finally how it will acquire it. Estimated cost is $90,000.

What a Reception!

INJURED WOMAN COMFORTED BY RESCUE SQUAD

Sunday Law Still Sought

The proposal for a Sunday closing ordinance is going the rounds of Coral Gables Civic and social organizations. So far, the Coral Gables Woman's Club, the Junior Woman's Club and Civic Club have passed resolutions in favor of the proposed legislation, but the Jaycees have so far refused to take a position because of any clear cut majority.

A Galiano Jaywalker Struck Down by Auto

A Southwest area woman run over by a car on Galiano Street just South of Miracle Mile early Monday afternoon as she crossed the street is reported in traction and in "good" condition at Doctors' Hospital. Lucinda L. Gorman, 38, 7910 SW 16th Ter., was run over by a car driven by Iris G. Garcia, 27, 220 SW 18th Rd. The driver was charged with careless driving. According to Officer Lamar Gilbert, the Garcia vehicle emerged from the alley leading from the First National Bank, made a left turn, and ran down the victim who was walking across the street approximately at mid-block. The woman was pinned underneath the car after it rolled over her. Jack Samios, a tailor at 2423 Galiano St., ran to a nearby Texaco gas station, where Cliff Kessinger, 7500 SW 105th Ter., got an automobile jack, rushed over to lift the car off the victim. Firemen Lloyd G. Griffith and Donald H. Bender gave the woman first aid.

They All Solve Ham’s Teaser

The answers (all right ones) have poured in since we printed a mathematical riddle on the editorial page last week. Everybody from housewives to high school principals (retired) to dog track controllers have had a solution to offer. The problem was posed by Hamilton Hayes, who himself once was an auditor at Hialeah race track. Printed below is one of the letters we got. For the other comments see the column Everybody's Business on page 4 and letters to editor. EDITOR: The answer to your riddle in the Oct. 18th edition is so simple you must have already received a thousand solutions. Using coins, makes it too simple. A nickel is heavier than a penny and the heavier weight of the nickel is too obvious. So, let's use marbles, one of which is heavier than the other eleven. You put four marbles in a dish, four on one side of the scale and four on the other. If the scales balance, then the heavier marble is one the side of the scale going down. We then eliminate eight marbles, using only the four in which the heavier marble must be. Then we put two marbles on each side of the scale, thus eliminating two more marbles. The third weighing then eliminates the lighter of the two last marbles. All this proves that Hialeah may be a larger track, but we have the better auditors.
