Dr. Coleman Is Chosen Baptist Moderator In '63
DR. COLEMAN ... Baptist leader for the year. University Baptist Church pastor, Dr. T. Rupert Coleman, was unanimously chosen to be moderator of next year's Miami Baptist Association meeting at the close of this year's meeting Friday of last week. He will lead the 67 Baptist churches and 19 missions of Dade and Monroe Counties, Rev. James McKeithan of Miami and pastor of the Sunset Heights Baptist Church was elected vice-moderator. As a double honor, Dr. Coleman was chosen to bring the annual association sermon at the opening of the 1963 annual meeting to be held next October at the First Baptist Church of South Miami. He is also chairman of the Public Affairs Committee of the Florida Baptist Convention and a member of the Southern Baptist Convention's Commission on Christian Life. Though the University church is fourth in number of members, 2,404, it led the association in total new members for the year reporting 278. To the cooperative program, the all-inclusive unified gift medium for supporting all the mission agencies and causes fostered by the Florida and Southern Baptist Conventions, the University church led in the association by giving $26,677.48 for the year.
Inventory Tax Brings Protests
Howls went up from some merchants last week end when they got their inventory tax bills from the City. Some claimed they had filed "honest" reports and that others were getting away with paying less tax. The City's internal auditor, Paul Gleman, indicated Tuesday that eventually everyone will be paying an honest tax—that everyone who isn't will be back-taxed. Gleman acknowledged getting a dozen calls a day from irate merchants, but that half these calls resulted from two bills going out by error instead of one. Only the current bill should be considered and paid, he said. The second bill was included by mistake. Gleman had an answer in the form of a question for those who complain about their bill now: "Why didn't they appear before the Board of Equalization?" Tax Assessor T. C. Blount said he had only one complaint and that was adjusted by the Board. "They tripled my taxes. It was uncalled for," said Sid Lurie of Lurie's Naturalizer Shoes, 279 Miracle Mile. Lurie said he would ask the City to come in and inventory his stock, which he said was evaluated at $6,000 more than what he has. Gleman defended his surveys. Merchants, he said, are being assessed at 80%, rather than at 60%, as was the case last year. But millage dropped from 19 mills to 13.3. The City picked up an extra $100,000, partly as a result of this, Gleman explained, but also from erroneous returns. He estimated that 97% of the first 500 returns studied contained errors. There are a total of approximately 2,000 returns to be studied. The City may back tax for three years if an error is found. Merchants who claim their inventory taxes are too high may offer any proof including income tax reports if they want to challenge the City's claim, said Gleman. The City's policy is not to ask to see income tax reports except when volunteered. Meanwhile, Chamber Manager Lee Smith said he wouldn't be surprised if the matter came up at the Chamber's next Board of Director's meeting (tonight, Thursday), although he has received no formal complaints on the matter.

Tour World Through Music at CG High
A world tour through music will be given at 8 p.m., Nov. 3, when the Coral Gables High Coral Department presents its annual variety show "Jabberwocky." Although the emphasis will be upon coral music, dancing, drama, humor and instrumental music will be featured. Included in the program will be show tunes, such as "Sound of Music," popular songs, like "Moon River and Autumn Leaves," rhythmical spirituals, patriotic tunes, calypso music, and barber shop quartets. A jazz duet has been formed by Don Smith on double bass and Lance Kaufman at the piano. Les Haber will accompany them on the drums. Bill Sussman, Leslie Jansson and Ruth Tyler are among the vocalists. A novelty calypso dance will be done by Sue Morrill, and a dance comedy, "Tic Twitch," by Larkin Bobo. One student, David Vance, will do "Lucky Star," a rock 'n roll song that he has written. A girl's quartet will accompany him. Musical accompaniment for the entire program will be furnished by Valrie Marks and Lani Fink. Approximately 200 students will participate. The theme "Jabberwocky" is taken from Louis Carroll's poem, and a 12-foot dragon representing the Jabberwocky will be suspended from the stage.

Ben Gaines, came back to the City Commission Tuesday to get approval for another sign for his Holiday Inn Hotel on South Dixie Highway. He got it on a year to year basis after agreeing to build a shield, channeling and recessing the letters. The sign, which will be placed on the northeast corner of the hotel, had been turned by the Board of Architects. Three signs, one detached, and two on the front of the three-story building had been approved earlier, but Gaines had to come back to appeal the fourth and won.
