Remember The Times
ONE YEAR AGO Mayor Robert L. Searle called a meeting to explore possibilities of building a new 40,000-seat football stadium on the University of Miami campus . . . Jack Brasington, Robert Clarke, W. D. Cole, A. John Lewallen Jr., A. Jerome Montgomery, Ralph R. Morgan, C. D. Pippinger, Don Wilburn and W. A. Willis were ordained deacons for the University Baptist Church. TEN YEARS AGO Mrs. Louis Rosenberg had a Royal Poinciana tree stolen from her front yard . . . Mr. and Mrs. G. N. Boucher flew to Iron Mountain, Mich., to attend the wedding of their niece, Miss Betty Bacco, and Tom Wakefield . . . The Coral Gables Newcomers Club had a Shipwrecked Party at the Ocean Ranch Motel. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Miss Lillian Foulks was appointed story teller for the weekly Junior Women's Club story hour at the Coral Gables Library . . . W. Keith Phillips was re-elected Chairman of the Orange Bowl Committee . . . Mrs. J. G. Spitz won her third Miami Woman's Golf Association medal play tournament in three years at the Country Club of Coral Gables.
COUNTY LINE
with Ed Knight The student has his Rome, his Florence, his whole glowing Italy, within the four walls of his library. He has in his books the ruins of an antique world and the glories of a modern one—Longfellow. SURPRISINGLY, West and South Dade Countians are as interested as Gableites in where Coral Gables is going to build its new library. One thing is certain. They want it within walking distance of downtown and the bus station in particular. THINK GABLEITES are the only ones holding Coral Gables library cards? Nope. The list is a long one of non-Gableites who somehow make their way to Coral Gables' outgrown library in the northern end of the city, take out books, do research and just plain relax, bary, browse and snooze a little and even read a book? CORAL GABLES' city fathers are faced with an important decision — where to put the library to benefit the most people. The original site was adjacent to the city hall on Biltmore Way. It's an ideal location. It's within walking distance of the bus station, Miracle Mile and the center of Coral Gables. BUT SOMEONE had a change of heart. A total of 12 other locations have been suggested, with the number one choice being the worst for those who will be using the library the most. A library, the kind Coral Gables is planning, can be the center of culture for an entire community. WE HOPE Coral Gables will take a lesson from Miami and build its library in a location best suited to all. Coral Gables should learn a lesson from its Youth Center. The old Youth Center was ideally located. It was well used. The present youth center is in an awkward location. Its use is limited.
Everybody's Business
by Rolfe Neill (Continued from Page 4) us: "Your little riddle is, I suspect, too simple for the male mind!" Me, Too Belatedly, it occurred to me that if you can do it with groups of six or five, why not four? So, herewith: 1. Divide the 12 coins into three groups of four. Weigh and find which group has the heavier coin (either on the balance or off). 2. Take the group of four having the heavier coin and split into two's. Weigh and find which is heavier. 3. Split the twosome into 1's and weigh a third time for the answer. Harry Rath As I said, Harry Rath had an answer, too. He did it a different way (so did Svensen Woodworth, 5363 Orduna Dr. Here's Rath's: 1. Divide the coins into three groups, A, B and C. There are five in groups A&B and two in C. Weigh the two groups of five coins. If A or B is heavy, group again. (If they balance then it's C and you can find out with only a second weighing.) 2. On regrouping the heavier of A and B, split the five coins into two groups of two and a group of 1. 3. On the second weighing of two groups of two each, you can find which is heavier and then split it again for the third weighing to find the coin. (If they balance, you know it's the odd coin not weighed.) Rath, retired in June from a notable career as an educator and Gables High principal, spent an exciting time in Maine this summer in school. He liked the six weeks so much he signed for a second. He said he was excited by the course on current economic issues. He and Mrs. Rath then toured the Gaspe area of Canada and the St. Lawrence. In New Brunswick at Moncton, they saw what is one of the wonders of this continent: That immense tide that suddenly fills a dry river bed and you can hear it coming long before it gets there. This has been such an attraction over the years that a public clock is posted with the time of the daily tides. Big Business If you don't think running schools is a big business today consider this: Students themselves are currently trying to raise $21,000 at Coral Gables High. That's $6,000 to air condition and equip the new offices there and $15,000 to send the band to Chicago.
A LIBRARY CARD for non-Gables residents is $3 a year. It's worth it. For this reason west and south Dadeites want to be heard. The city is prepared to spend some $400,000 for the two-story structure which is slated to be the second finest library in Dade County. LOCATION IS a big item in the construction of a library. Miami spent some $500,000 years ago in construction of its excellent library. But they goofed in one important item. The library no more belongs in Bayfront Park than does the city jail. How many students can benefit from a library in that location? How many oldsters can walk casually to the li-
