James S. Greene, 1002 Capri St., completed six carrier qualification landings aboard the USS Antietam, operating in the Gulf of Mexico, while undergoing basic flight training at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola. Art Bivens, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Bivens Jr., pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity during fall rush at Georgia Institute of Technology. Ladies Auxiliary of the Ray Renuart VFW Post, 45 Almira St., will be the hostess group for the District No. 5 meeting to be held at 10 a.m. Sunday. Schools of instruction will be held on auditing, membership, cancer and national home duties. PVT. BLAKE Marine Pvt. John C. Blake, son of Mrs. Yvonne B. Newcomb, 1217 Algeria Ave., has completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Both maternal and paternal grandparents of Virginia Sue Harlow, who was born Oct. 16 at Doctors Hospital, are Gableites of many years. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Harry Higgins, 908 Andres Ave., and her paternal grandparents are the Rev. and Mrs. Frank Harlow of Obispo Ave. Virginia Sue's parents are Mr. and Mrs. John Rees Harlow, 5845 SW 114th Ter. Marine Aviation Cdt. James S. Greene, son of Mr. and Mrs. 1511 Madrid St., recently completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Jim Lyons of Coral Gables appeared last week in Gymkana's "Pirate Daze" at Florida State University. Gymkana includes gymnastics, dancing and singing. Jim performed on the parallel bars. Coral Gables woman's Club was one of the hostess clubs for the first meeting of the Dade County Federation held yesterday (Wednesday) at the Miami Woman's Club. Leeanne Mitchell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leeds M. Mitchell, Jr., 925 Andalusia Ave., was among the 320 students qualifying for the dean's list for 1961-62 at Denison University, Granville, Ohio. Newcomers to Coral Gables are the Nelson E. Thompsons, 2800 Toledo St., who have come here from Port Jervis, N.Y. Mr. Thompson is president of University National Bank, for which ground was broken recently on South Dixie Highway. Asked how she liked the Gables, Mrs. Thompson laughed naturedly and said, "I think it's a fine place in which to get lost!" Mrs. Thompson explained it took her a half-hour to get through our winding streets from her home to her husband's office. She said it would have been a five-minute trip.
