University Baptist Plans a ‘Special’

University Baptist Church will honor its intermediate department with a special "Intermediate Day" this Sunday. Sunday School classes from the primary department through the adults will be taught by the intermediates. Jack Epperson Jr., will serve as pastor; George Cole, minister of education; W. A. Williamson Jr., minister of music; Charles F. Tate III, minister of youth; Jay Scott, Sunday School superintendent; and Michael C. Cole, chairman of the deacons. At the Sunday evening service, the Oratorio Choir, with orchestral accompaniment, and under the direction of Cecil L. Harper, minister of music, will present "God's Trombones," work of composer Roy Ringwald. The arrangement is based upon the collection of poems by James Weldon Johnson, who thought the voice of the Negro preacher was like a wonderful trombone. Ringwald has designed the musical setting as a sequence for the preacher, a woman prayer leader, soloists, chorus and small orchestra. William O. Brown III will read the part of the preacher, while Mrs. Matthew C. Yow Jr., will be the prayer leader. Mrs. Afa Steele will play the organ and Mrs. Ralph Dowling will be at the piano.

The Name Gables Isn't Ours to Own Legally

Coral Gables Convalescent Home, nowhere near the Gables, is resting easy after the Florida Supreme Court upheld its right to use that name. The home, located at 7060 Tamiami Trail - nearly 20 blocks from the nearest Gables property, has got a permanent claim on that name. "They got away with it because there was no competition," said City Attorney Ted Semple this week. The court's ruling, Semple said, in no way implies that any individual may use the name Coral Gables. The establishment had used that name for a long time and it did not compete with any local institution, Semple said.
