Gables Will Need Salesmanship For Latin Plans, He Tells Us

A University of Miami professor who has spent his life writing about the economics of and living among the people of Latin America doesn't see much future for the Gables as an Inter-American business beachhead. He is Dr. Harry Stark of the School of Business Administration. He addressed about 65 Chamber of Commerce members Thursday morning of last week at the monthly Coffee Club, held at Folly Davis Cafeteria. Dr. Stark sketched the problems of Latin America thusly: 1. Inflation. Costs may go up as much as 50% in a year to the consumer while wages don't. 2. Population. Population is expanding rapidly and income is not exceeding the increase in population. 3. Government. Often unstable, the governments have "exaggerated Social Security schemes" which are prohibitive in cost. 4. Investments. Local capital, fearing the political instability, flees the country. Foreign capital is afraid to come in. 5. Nationalization. Businesses such as utilities are being taken over from private investors and costs immediately go up while rates, subject to political reprisal at the polls, remain the same. 6. Diversification. The countries manufacture little for themselves. They have few markets, exporting mostly agricultural products and extractive materials from their mines. Dr. Stark's only hopeful comment for Coral Gables, whose Chamber of Commerce is seeking to make it a corporate headquarters business community, is that the Gables may be able to do with salesmanship what it can't do otherwise. That, indicated Chamber leaders afterwards, is what it intends to do.

NO PARKING GONE

A Coral Gables woman who had put up her own "no parking" signs in front of her property complained to Gables police Friday that Metro authorities had taken them down. Gables police checked, and sure enough Metro had removed the signs from in front of the home of Nell Sheetz, 2907 Columbus Blvd.
