Light Up Your Home, Someone Else's Life

An effort to sell over a quarter million light bulbs is the goal of 35 Lions Clubs in greater Miami in their eighth annual door-to-door sale beginning Monday. Arch Walker, 4100 SW 107th Pl., is the area chairman for the district including West Miami, West Dade, Suniland, Perrine and Redlands Lions Clubs — one of six districts to be covered in Dade County by 1,500 Club members. Proceeds are used by the clubs in their sight conservation program, including free eye examinations and medical assistance for needy school children. Electric light bulbs are offered at retail price during the 16-day sale period, ending Oct. 31. HOW IT STARTED In early 1952, a lady of Granada Presbyterian Church won a baking contest in which the prize was a new stove. She sold the stove, donated the money to the church and that was how the organ fund started.
