At Southwest High 16 Tapped by Quill Group
By JOY CHERRY Correspondent Quill and Scroll National Honor Society tapped 16 new members in a red feather ceremony with the parents present, Oct. 10. These tapees are staff members of the Lancer or the Aquila and are now in their third semester of journalism. After a two week pledge period they will be inducted at the bi-annual Quill and Scroll banquet. The pledges are Steve Berlinsky, Marybeth Dittemore, Patsye Doyle, Connie Feltham, Joanne Glass, Jan Glidewell, Ken Golden, Sherri Hirsh, Carolyn O'Malley, Adrian Schwartz, Roz Yagman, Martha Zamarano, Leslie Warren, Robin Mason, Sally Kitchin and Bill White. DOUGHNUT SALE Six hundred doughnuts should keep the hungry Southwesterners satiated after school Oct. 23 and 24. In an effort to fatten the newspaper treasury, the Lancer staff plans to make close to $40 while the student body feasts. The doughnuts, varied in size and flavor, will be sold at several designated places outside the school building. HOMECOMING WORK The Student Council has begun work on the activities for Southwest's Third Homecoming. Committee plans for the dance, bonfire, parade, and coronation of the Queen are now underway. The turkeyday game, Nov. 23, will highlight the week. DEBATERS' FORMULA "Take a good look at Southwest's trophy case when next you go by," Roy French reminded Southwest students. "There are many splendid momentos enshrined there, but there isn't a single plaque, medallion, or trophy for forensics ability." Retiring undefeated from the University of Miami debate team, French spoke with the voice of experience as he challenged students to "begin to accumulate some of these prized possessions starting with this year." He summed up the debaters' plans with one word, "work."

VOTE NO TO PREVENT MORE OF THIS--
DISRESPECT FOR CHURCHES When Commission was discussing space for a chapel at new International Airport, Commissioner McLeod said, "I'd like to amend the motion, that it be put out to bid to see who runs the church." (The implication was the best moneymaker would get the chapel.) Nov., 1958 CALLS VETERANS "DRUNK STUMBLEBUMS" During Commission discussion of space in Courthouse for a Veteran's Service office, McLeod said, "If you do this, you are going to have every drunk stumblebum Veteran in the world in this courthouse." June, 1958 PLEADS FOR GAMBLING CASINOS "This is purely a money deal. I plead with you all to do this one thing. Consider it personal or any way you want it. I ask you all to please pass this ordinance on a first reading today." Sept., 1958 $500,000 PURCHASE FOR HIS BENEFIT On purchase of Biscayne Arena, a $500,000 white elephant now on county hands, "I'm all for buying the arena, because I own the property next to it." Aug., 1958 $29,000 SURVEY, ANOTHER BENEFIT On why he wanted a $29,000 survey made for a Causeway to Elliott Key, "We decided since we own the island, we want the survey made." Jan., 1958 MORE CONFLICT OF INTEREST His insurance firm wrote the bid bond on a $2,500,000 airport paving contract. "I'm going to write every bond I can get my hands on, and it's nobody's business."
