Egyptians Once Venerated University's Ibis
In ancient times, the ibis, a large wading bird related to the heron, was venerated as a god-symbol by the Egyptians. Now, virtually extinct, it lives on as the venerated symbol of school spirit for University of Miami students. One ibis in particular - Sebastian - characterizes UM's fighting spirit on the gridiron. A grizzled, tough-looking caricature of a bird, actually a costumed student, Sebastian parades up and down the sidelines during each UM game. He has been accused of being cute, in appropriate and sexy. At first no one knew whether he was male or female. Sebastian was originated as "Icky the Ibis" during the 1957 Homecoming Week when it was a figment of the imagination of a group of students in the San Sebastian Men's Residence Hall. By the following year, it materialized for an appearance at what was expected to be a very sad affair. Miami was in the midst of its worst football season in memory, its final record, two wins-eight losses. "Icky" was hatched for the Vanderbilt game, but the team kept laying its own eggs, losing 28-15. Sebastian however, quickly renamed because "Icky" sounded too much of defeatism, caught on and the next year it was back with a "professional" outfit furnished by athletic department funds. The students inside her were then senior John Stormont ('60), chief initiator of the plan, and Junior Charles Nomina ('61). No sooner had Sebastian started its first full year, however, when the question of its sex arose. A Fort Lauderdale housewife wrote it a fan letter, calling it "the cutest thing." Then someone called UM Dean of Men Ben David complaining that the Ibis looked "too sexy" and that some of its motions were obscene. Besides, the caller asked, is it a boy or a girl? Dean David said that he didn't know, but would chek on it. Nomina and Stormont said that perhaps the long, orange stockings they wore to simulate the Ibis's legs were a bit too tight; and also hastened to inform all the Sebastian was a boy-type ibis. Sebastian the Ibis, that is Stormont and Nomina, has since delighted spectators at UM games home and away and pep rallies. Sometimes Sebastian climbs into the stands to play with the children. At last year's Homecoming Parade he delighted the kiddies along the route. When the campus newspaper, Hurricane, put out a special edition exhorting the 1960 Orange Bowl committee for a bid to the New Year's Classic, Stormont climbed cheerfully into his costume and distributed the papers on the streets of downtown Miami. Passer by were too surprised to do any thing but grab the paper. Stormont graduated last June as a Radio-TV major. He was hailed by the student press as "our first graduating ibis."
How many savings accounts should I have?
Coral Gables Federal SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION REGULAR SAVINGS ACCOUNT Coral Gables Federal SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION TAX SAVINGS ACCOUNT Coral Gables Federal SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION VACATION SAVINGS ACCOUNT Coral Gables Federal SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION COLLEGE SAVINGS ACCOUNT Coral Gables Federal SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION CHRISTMAS SAVINGS ACCOUNT That depends on YOU! How well you manage your money...and what you are saving for...are the determining factors in deciding how many accounts you should have at Coral Gables Federal. Separate accounts for each of your major needs is the easy, practical way to "budget for the future"....before the need occurs. First and most important is your Regular Savings Account, providing a general cash reserve for emergencies at any time...accumulating the down payment for a home of your own...assuring security and peace of mind for the years to come. But what about once-a-year expenses like taxes? They can take quite a "chunk" out of your regular savings...opening a Special Tax Account is a more realistic (and painless) way to meet this annual need. The same applies to Christmas and Vacation money...best handled through individual accounts. And for your children, of course, you want to do all you can to help them with their higher education...and the way to do it is through a Special College Savings Account. How else could you meet this future expense? So YOU decide how many savings accounts you need at Coral Gables Federal. Each account - Regular or Special - earns dividends at the current rate of 4% per annum, payable twice a year on December 31 and June 30. Accounts are insured up to $10,000 by a permanent agency of the U.S. Government. And each account enables you to "budget for the future"...whatever your needs may be.
