Touchdown! Touchdown! Then 'Tommy' Roars
"Touchdown Tommy" was born into University of Miami football tradition in 1935 when an excited cheerleader began firing a pistol into the air to celebrate each Hurricane touchdown. Today, "Tommy" is a 10 gauge cannon. In contrast to his forebearer he shoots blanks - but he's no less dangerous. Tommy has raised inadvertent havoc on many occasions. His gunners for the last decade have been the boys of Sigma Chi social fraternity, a trigger-happy bunch, as Tom's record proves. Frustrated by one game in the early 40's in which the Miami gridders didn't score once, Tommy went off "accidentally" in a hotel lobby. Again, a few years ago, Tommy let loose two salvos in the midst of a post-game Orange Bowl traffic jam. Of late, however, the tradition has been altered to prevent this expression of frustration. Tommy bonis several times each game, wheather Miami scores or not. He salutes the players as they trot on and off the field. Tommy's primary purpose, however, is to celebrate touchdowns. And this has led to additional embarrassment. In a 1958 game, Tommy went off in the ear of a Miami end just as he grabbed a pass in the end zone. The startled player dropped the ball. Tommy also ranks among his victims several referees, reporters and photographers by the dozen and even this year Athletic Director Jack Harding. "We yelled for him to get out of the way," this year's gunner Brad Hubert explains. "But he didn't hear us," Harding heard Tommy's report however, and jumped "about three feet in the air" coming down in a cloud of Tommy's smoke, unharmed but red-faced. Tommy has had its cultural fling too. In 1942 it lent realism to an interpretation of Tschaikovsky's 1812 Overture by the UM Symphony Orchestra. Tommy has the run of the Orange Bowl turf in order to be able to get right up on the action. Consequently it often sneaks up behind unwary photographers and policeman on the field. "They usually laugh at us when we tell them to get out of the way," Hubert says. "But it only takes once..." "Touchdown Tommy" has an authoritative speaking voice. He hopes to do a lot of talking Saturday night.

This 'N That About Miami
One of the men who will be broadcasting the radio account of Saturday night's Homecoming game, Robert Stanton, was the first student body president at the University of Miami. He was also a member of the first UM football and basketball teams. He is now a member of the radio-TV faculty. Victor Belaunde, last year's president of the United Nations was a member of the original UM faculty. The Peruvian diplomat taught Latin American history. Among the advertisers in UM's 1927 yearbook, IBIS, was the MIAMI RIVIERA, now the Coral Gables Times-Guide. Student chairman of UM's 1961 Homecoming Week is "Buzz" Schubart. In charge of alumni plans is Ralph Renick. UM's biggest enrollment jump was a highlight of the "Fabulous Forties." This was a result of the post-war rush to education. Enrollment in 1945 was 1923 and 6902 by 1946. In 1926, UM boasted a student body of 711. The original faculty and administration totaled 47. Today, there are 14,102 students at UM and 995 faculty and administrators, plus 524 voluntary medical instructors.

The president of UM's 1941 senior class, Charlie Franklin, served an abbreviated term. He was drafted. His successor, by popular vote, thereafter had to resign when it was discovered that he was only a junior. The Department of Zoology was begun at UM in its first year, 1926. Sharing the teaching duties with one other instructor was Jay F. W. Pearson, now President of the University.
