ODK Leads The Way For Homecoming
For 11 years, UM's Homecoming celebration has been under the sponsorship of Omicron Delta Kappa, men's leadership honorary. The tolling of the Homecoming Bell by the group's president is the official opening of each Homecoming Week. ODK, as it is often abreviated, is the nation's highest leadership honorary for men. It requires that its members have been both outstanding leadership and academic records. It can tap no more than three percent of the male student body in any one year. Judge Ray Pearson is one of the community leaders who claims membership in the group. He became a charter member as an undergraduate in 1949. Coral Gables residents who became members while at UM include: Patrick J. Cesarano, George Vickery and Coral Gables Country Club manager Robert Yoxall. Former Miami mayor Randall N. Christmas, ex-speaker of the Florida House Ted David and Assistant State's Attorney Aram Goshgarian were also tapped. Miami grads in the journalism field who belong include Eddie Storin, John Schulte, Verne Williams and TIMES news editor Maurice Labelle. Clad in long, black academic robes, the group taps twice each year. It sponsors an annual Leadership Conference for high school students of the area.

Homecoming Bell Tolls For 34th
HOMECOMING WEEK officially began at noon Monday with the ringing of the Homecoming Bell on top of the University's Student Union by Omicron Delta Kappa President (far right) Byron Scott. ODK is the men's leadership honorary which sponsors Homecoming. The bell was rung 34 times, once for each year of UM's existence. Others in the picture are ODK Vice President Steve Kogan (left) and Secretary Frank Butler (center). When a 40-yearold ship's bell rang 34 times from its perch atop the Student Union at noon Monday, the University of Miami's Homecoming Week had officially begun. The Homecoming celebration has been rung in this manner for the past 10 years. The president of Omicron Delta Kappa, men's leadership honorary and sponsor of Homecoming, does the ringing, the alma mater is piped out over the campus via loud speakers — and the fun is on. For the first 25 years of its existence, however, UM's Homecoming bell served a radically different purpose. The 175-pound bell was formerly used to alert crew members of the destroyer "U. S. S. Bulmer" both of the time and enemy approach. The bell was "retired" after World War 11 as a veteran of both the South Pacific and Atlantic campaigns, a casualty of war. Somewhere along the way it had been cracked by enemy shell fire. The bell's tone, however, as a decade of UM'ers have noted, is still imposing as an admiral's order. The bell came to UM from the Navy in 1951 in answer to a request from the Pep Club and in appreciation for the University's participation in the Navy V-12 program during the war. Exposed to South Florida weather the year-round, this year including Hurricane Donna, the bell stands impassive and immobile over the Student Union'smain entrance. However, since it cannot resist the elements entirely, it is also subject to a yearly cleaning — besides ringing. This year the rooftop reclamation heroes were hapless pledges from Kappa Alpha social fraternity. For a brief time this year the bell had been used as a ground for a television aerial by unsentimental workmen to serve the Union's television sets. This was uickly removed after indignant student protests.
