Homecoming Parade Big And Colorful, It's Ready To Roll

The largest Homecoming Parade in the University of Miami's history, stretching out for a gaily decorated mile-and-a-half, will wind its way through the streets of Coral Gables tonight. Seventy-nine floats, a half dozen marching units and more than 40 convertibles, each fully equipped with coed beauties will participate in the annual event, beginning at 7:30 p.m. A motorcade of dignitaries, including University deans, Gables City Manager, L. W. Robinson Jr.; Chamber of Commerce Manager Edward Baumel and local merchant Carroll Seghers will precede the main body of the parade. Robinson, Baumel and Seghers are this year's judges, charged with awarding prizes to the best of what passes by their judges' stand in front of City Hall during the two-hour-long parade. Right after the dignitaries will come UM's Band of the Hour and the Coronation Float, bearing Queen Sara Lynn Thompson and her court. Each carrying the general theme "Beat Notre Dame," the floats will range in approach from Army ROTC's "Send the Irish to the Moon" to the freshman Class's classical suggestion, "Olympian Oracle's Fate Rules Notre Dame Sacrifice." Other entries include Delta Delta Delta sorority, with the girls as washerwomen, making sure "The Irish Are All Washed Up." There'll also be Delta Zeta sorority making "Irish Stew," Kappa Sigma fraternity denying the "Luck of the Irish?" and engineering students showing how to "Milk Notre Dame Dry." For those who might miss the parade, the floats will also be part of Saturday night's halftime presentation at the game itself. "This is by far the biggest parade we've ever had," the parade's student chairman Bob Wortman said. We expect it to be a wonderful sight for Coral Gables residents, alumni and students alike." The parade route will cover over two miles, begining and ending in the parking lot of UM's Anastasia Building. At 7:30 P.M., the groups will move out onto University Drive and down Ponce de Leon Blvd. to Miracle Mile, where they will turn west and head for the Coral Gables City Hall. The judges and dignitaries will review them from a stand beside the City Hall on Biltmore Way. A special section of bleachers will be set up opposite them for special guests. The parade will pass them, turn down Segovia Blv'd. and head back to its dispersal area.

20 Dire Displays Decorations Follow Big Jinx Tradition

In the best voodoo tradition, the University of Miami Campus is decorated this week with more than 20 displays predicting dire fates for UM's Homecoming grid opponent, Notre Dame. Most of the decorations are attached to the University's fraternity houses, residence halls, and religious centers. They graphically predict what the UM mascot, Ibis, will do to the hapless Irish in the Orange Bowl, Saturday night. As to method, however, opinions vary . . . San Sebastian Men's Residence Hall on LeJeune Rd. and University Drive, for instance, has "Sebastian" the Ibis gaily boiling Irish Stew. Delta Phi Epsilon sorority's display, on the north corner of Miller and University Drives, predicts that the Ibis will "K. O. the Irish." Phi Sigma Delta faternity, 1531 Liguria Drive, would stone the Irish with their own Blarney Stone. Pi Kappa Alphia, San Amaro Drive, would simply "Mow the Irish Down." Sigma Phi Epsilon, 833 SW 37th Ave., would employ another animal's help in asking the Hurricanes to "Skunk 'Em." Beta Sigma Pho, 600 Red Rd., would be more mechanical in their efforts to "Plow Them Shanty Irish." The determination to do the Irish mayhem is best shown in the Sigma Kappa sorority display by the Student Union, which simply states; "Death to the Irish!" Winners of the various house decorations awards will be announced tonight at the student dance on Main Campus after the parade. Judges for the contest were Gables commercial artist William Bishop, Joseph Mantinan, administrative assistant to the city manager, and South Miami City Manager C. B. Petry.
