Greatest Crowd In Years Expected Tonight Fighting Irish Capture Public's Imagination
By GEORGE GALLET The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, who have caught the imagination of the public with their spirited play over the years, are expected to be at their best when they tackle the Univ. [?]ty of Miami Hurricanes in UM's homecoming Saturday night, Nov. 12, in the Orange Bowl. The greatest crowd to see the Hurricanes in years will be on hand for the great spectacle—have to see Miami against the most famous name in college football—Notre Dame. Opening Game Notre Dame this fall knocked off California in its opening game, but injuries then cropped up and the Fighting Irish have had trouble. Against Navy, one of the big powers of the nation, Notre Dame played no less than sensational football despite its close 14 to 7 loss. The Irish threw the football aplenty in that game, and no doubt will bomb the Hurricanes with everything they have Saturday night. George Haffner is the really big gun in the Notre Dame passing attack. So far, he has thrown the football for close to 425 yards and two up South Bend way, they say he's "Getting tougher by the hour." For several weeks, Coach Kuharich was using as many as five quarterbacks in a game. Now Junior George Haffner has taken charge and his passes, both long and short, are clicking regularly. Ed Rutkowski, 190 pounder who ran the keeper play well but passed weekly, has been moved from the quarterback slot to fill a gaping offensive hole at halfback. Lost Top Runner The Irish lost Red Mack, one of their top runners, in the Purdue game and it has taken until now to get that trouble ironed out. Another hole developed at right end when John Powers was hurt in the Purdue game and lost for the season. Before that, Bob Hill, starting right tackle last year, broke his wrist but he may be ready to play against Miami. George Sefci, best of the returning halfbacks, has played gallantly all fall but a persistent leg injury has kept him from being at a peak which might have given him All America honors. The same goes for Myron Pottius, brilliant guard. Injuries to others have hurt as well and the Irish, who have a really good football squad have been made to look bad by a series of circumstances beyond their control. For once the "Luck of the Irish" has been all bad. Actually, the offense which the Notre Dame club will unfurl in the Orange Bowl Saturday night is expected to bother the Hurricanes no end. The Irish can move the ball on the ground and their aerial attack, just beginning to click, can make things very tough for Miami. Big Team It is a big team, almost any line combination put together for Notre Dame goes above 210 pounds and the backs, too are sizeable. For the most part, it is a sophomore-junior squad and has all the fire which goes with such outfits. On top of that, a season long case of frustration has been building up, ready to explode against any foe not ready for 60 minutes of tough, rough football. Saturday's game will be the second between the two teams. An all time regular season record crowd of 75,685 for Orange Bowl turned out Oct. 7, 1955 in the only previous game between the two schools. Notre Dame won that game 14-0 with Paul Hornung as the ace. The Hurricanes lost a TD when a John Varone slash into the end zone—he carried Hornung with him—was nullified by a backfield in motion penalty.

A Memorial Band Of Hour's First Director To Be Honored
The first director of UM's "Band of the Hour," the late Walter Schaeffer, will be honored tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 with the dedication of a memorial in his name. Consisting of a stone table and benches where weary band members may rest after practicing, the memorial commemorate Schaeffer's efforts as band director in the years 1927-38. Donors of the memorial table and benches are band alumni who played under Schaeffer's baton. Dr. Bertha Foster, dean emeritus of the music school, was leader of the drive for its establishment.
