Police ask aid in locating sex offender
A seven-year-old girl playing alone in a Southwest Dade park was sexually assaulted Wednesday, April 28, at 5 p.m. Police report that the little girl was approached by a man in his mid-20s. The man, a Caucasian, is said to have dark hair and a medium build, stands five feet, nine inches tall and wears glasses. Anyone with information should call the Public Safety Department at 547-7501.
Domestic assault
A man distraught over a pending divorce with his wife went to her business office Thursday, April 29, at 8 a.m. and slashed her with a butcher knife. Coral Gables police, who responded to the call, said the incident occurred at an office building at 1320 S. Dixie Hwy. The woman is in serious condition at South Miami Hospital. Her husband was booked into the county jail. The names of the couple have not been released, but officers said the man is black and the woman white.
Bad dog
Joyce Miller, who lives at 8822 Sunset Dr., was bitten by a dog on her way to school at Glades Junior High Tuesday, April 27. The dog, described as sickly, is a brown and black German shepherd, and is still on the loose, probably in the area of the school, 9451 SW 64th St. Anyone with information on the animal is urged to call Animal Control Officer Sherman at 638-6800.
Murder
Police say that a 78-year-old South Miami woman who was found suffocated in her apartment Wednesday, April 14, was murdered. The body of Mrs. Amelio Glafrido, who lived at 5965 SW 71st St., Apt. 5, was found by the apartment manager and South Miami police officer Dan Solerno. A neighbor had reported that she hadn't seen the elderly woman all morning. Salerno pried open the door lock with a knife when the apartment manager could not open it with a pass key. Police believe the murderer broke in by pushing in the kitchen window screen. The South Miami Police Department is working with the Public Safety Department in searching for the intruder. He is described as a black male in his late teens, of average height and weight.
Sexual assault
A 17-year-old Coral Gables girl was sexually assaulted by three men in her home Friday, April 30, at 3 a.m. Officers report the girl was sleeping when a man broke into her place and forced her to perform an unnatural sex act. The man left, but returned shortly with two companions. One of the newcomers again forced the girl to commit a sex act. Police are still investigating.
Farm Store heist
A young man who allegedly robbed the Farm Store at SW 87th Avenue and 72nd Street returned shortly afterwards and was arrested, Thursday, April 29. Twenty-year-old John Anthony Fusco strolled into the store at 4:45 p.m. with his hand under his shirt. Dilavina Lewkowicz a 26-year-old employe, believing he had a gun, gave up the contents in the cash register, police said. Fusco, Farm Store employes say, returned to the store at 6:55 p.m. and was recognized by Ms. Lewkowicz. She and another employe held Fusco until police arrived. Fusco, who lives at 8771 SW 72nd St., Apt. A-17, was booked into the Dade County jail.
Chief's wife
Mrs. Sal Vizzini, wife of South Miami Police Chief Sal Vizzini, had a brush with the law this week, and it wasn't at home. Mrs. Vizzini went to pick up a package of fried chicken on Bird Road, and as she drove back on SW 62nd Ave-nue, she saw a blue reflection in the mirror and heard a familiar sound: a police siren. Motorcycle Officer Felix Lacks and his partner Dan Salerno had caught the unsuspecting housewife going 40 m.p.h. in a 30 m.p.h. zone. After getting over their initial embarrassment, the officers gave Mrs. Vizzini a $25 ticket.
Attempted robbery
A South Dade man opened his door to a stranger who then tried to rob him Friday, April 23, at 10:23 a.m. Millard Mitchell, 45, who lives at 10600 SW 171st St. answered a knock at his door only be be punched by a man who then demanded money, officers report. When Mitchell got up and struggled with the would-be thief, the man fled empty-handed.
Motel robbed
The Dankers Motel at 5890 SW 8th St. was robbed Monday, April 26, at 11:30 p.m. Sixty-seven year-old Charles Rogers was manning the desk when a man walked in and pulled a handgun, police say, forcing Rogers to give up the money in the cash register.
