Coral Gables banker chosen to lead city's Lions Club

Bill Swain of Florida National Bank has been elected president of the Coral Gables Lions Club. In elections held April 21, the club selected Joel Lehman as first vice president, John Tawa as second vice president, Charles Harris as third vice president and Ben Lopez as "tail twister." Harold Rash was named "Lion tamer" and the new board of directors includes Homer Gray, Chuck Powell, Ben Robinson and Jack Widdersheim. A new secretary and treasurer will be appointed by the president. The officers will be installed Friday, June 11, at 7 p.m. in the Airport Lakes Holiday Inn. Lt. Col. Smith

Judge honored

County Judge Henry L. Oppenborn, Jr., will be installed as Commander of the Miami Chapter, The Military Order of World Wars, Tuesday, May 4, at Riviera Country Club in Coral Gables. Installing officer will be Col. Starbuck Smith, Jr., of Cincinnati, the Commander-in-Chief of the Order. Others to be installed include Brig. Gen. Philip D. Myers, Senior Vice Commander; LtCdr. Richard H. Dewey, Adjutant; and Col. Dwight E. Aultuan, II, Treasurer. Members of the Coral Gables, Key West, Miami Beach and Hollywood Chapter will also be present. LTC George R. Greshau is commander of the Coral Gables Chapter.

New officers

of the Coral Gables Women's Club will be installed by Mrs. James L. Anderson, past president, at a noon luncheon at the clubhouse, 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd., Monday, May 3. They are: president, Mrs. George F. Stebbins; first-vice-president, Mrs. John C. Fryer; second vice-president, Mrs. Mildred McDonald; recording secretary, Mrs. Ralph E. Muelver; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Douglas H. Reynolds; financial secretary, Mrs. Lester D. Johnson; treasurer, Mrs. B. Edward Wood. Three past presidents who will be installed as directors are Mrs. E. T. Nickas, Mrs. James W. Deville, Jr., and Mrs. Joe Popp.

Honor luncheon

Women's American ORT, Dade South Region, will hold its first Annual Honor Roll Luncheon at Kings Bay Yacht and Country Club, Tuesday, May 4, at 11:30 a.m. Mrs. Vernica Marx, Region Honor Roll Chairman, is Chairlady of the Day, with Mrs. Alan Stone and Mrs. Alan Benjamin in charge of seating arrangements. Installation

Using the theme, "Third Century Woman," the new officers of the Coral Gables Business and Professional Women's Club will be installed by Charter President and Honorary Life Member, Nina Manning, at a brunch at Coral Gables Country Club Sunday, May 2 at 11:30 a.m. New officers include: president, Mrs. Janie Arnold; first vice-president, Mrs. Dorothy Tindell; secondvice-president, Mrs. Margaret Richards; third vice-president, Mrs. Mae Rosia; recording secretary, Mrs. Velma Stiner; treasurer, Mrs. Edna Cook; and trustee, Mrs. Sybilla Simard.

Photo competition

Florida Reef Divers Association, in conjunction with Concord Studio and Camera Shop, 11279 SW 40th St., is sponsoring a photography contest. Childbirth film

The Childbirth and Parent Education Association will show a childbirth film Tuesday, May 4, 8 p.m., at Variety Children's Hospital. Discussion will follow on pregnancy, nutrition and prepared childbirth. For more information, call 856-4707.

Retiree meeting

The Greater Coral Gables Chapter #449 of the American Association of Retired Persons, Inc. will meet Wednesday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall of Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3020 DeSoto Blvd. The program features Rev. Father George A. Gladky, Pastor of the Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ the Savior, who will speak on Russia. Visitors are welcome.

Music week

Coral Gables Music Club, Mrs. J. Burnham Maylard, president, will present an Afternoon of Music in observation of National Music Week Sunday, May 2, at 2 p.m. at 4210 Monserrate St., Coral Gables. National Music Week, sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs, a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of music, has been proclaimed Sunday, May 2, through Sunday, May 9.

24 students vie for honors

Two out of 24 high school students nominated for their outstanding community service will be honored at the annual Dade County Outstanding Citizens Award luncheon, Thursday, May 6, at the Four Ambassadors. The ceremonies are being hosted by Sholem Lodge No. 1024, B'nai B'rith, and patron Joseph M. Lipton, board-chairman of Dade Federal Savings and Loan Association. Among high school nominees for the award are: Ronald Herndon, South Dade High; Michael Hunnicut, Deerborne High; Michael King, Miami Christian School; Peter J. Murray, Coral Gables High; Mark Frederick Smith, Southwest High; and Paul E. Wilkie, Immaculata-LaSalle. Also the nominees are Kathleen Susan Clark, Southwest High; Nicole Denise Etchart, Coral Park High; Joy Ann Hart, Coral Gables High; Beth Ann Levey, Palmetto High; Laura Mary Mudd, Immaculata-LaSalle; Ann Perry Sutherland, Deerborne; and Paula Jean Nicols, South Dade High. For the first time, the adult and youth awards will be given together at the countywide ceremonies. The adult recipients of the awards last year will present $100 scholarships to the two students chosen for the honor. Nominations were conducted through public and private schools to give all high school students an opportunity for recognition. Mrs. J. Riley Staats, is the chairman and originator of the youth recognition program. The panel of judges included Mrs. Charles H. Finkelstein, J. Alan Cross, Mrs. William O. Mehrtens, Edward F. Swenson Jr., and Mrs. Margaret Cann.
