Man claims home's termites came from Village Green school

From Page 1 fumigated last summer, and have been fumigated twice in the last few years. Harpe, who has worked for the Department of Health Education and Welfare as a data processing manager for the Cuban Refugee Program since its inception, said that he has never seen any of the old portables tented. Jenisu B. Ansley, principal of Village Green for the past three years, said all of the portables used by the school children as classrooms, were fumigated during the summer of 1974. Mrs. Albert Dickson, another neighbor whose home also borders the 32nd Terrace side of the school, said that some, not all of the portables were tented about a year ago. "I had my home checked for termites when the portables were tented last year, because I nearly had a fit then," said Mrs. Dickson. "It has been almost a year and I haven't noticed any termites, but I'm going to check now," she added. Robert Turner, superintendent of the Southwest School District, said that the portables don't have to be tented to be fumigated for termites. "They don't have to be tented to be fumigated," said Turner. "We do have trouble with termites in wooden buildings, but I'm sure they have been fumigated in the past." A spokesman for Orkin Exterminators said that all buildings with exposed wood on the outside have to be tented in order to disinfect them from termites. "We've done many school portables in the past and they have to be tented because the outside wood is just as infested as the inside," said the inspector from Orkin. "I can't do anything to my house until they do something to those portables, and meanwhile, the termites are eating away," said Harpe. "If they don't tent those unsightly things (school portables), and I go ahead and tent my house, the termites could come back the next day..." Clifford Harpe 12253 SW 32nd Terr. "We've suffered long enough by having to face those ugly things for so long, but to put the frosting on the cake, they have brought termites into the neighborhood at our expense and inconvenience." The portables, which could be as old as 30 or 40 years, are used for two regular classes of elementary school children, one kindergarten play activity class, three Spanish classes and an art class. One school official said some of the portables have been at Village Green for nine years. "It seems unbelievable that children have had to go to school in those sub-standard portables," said Harpe. "If they've needed portables for nine years, they should know by now that they need to build an additional part to the school," he said. According to Turner, the portables will continue to be used by the school children, because there are no plans for construction in the near future. "Now I'm faced with the problem of moving out of the house for two days and staying in a motel while they tent the house," Harpe said. "I'll have to dig up all the plants and shrubs in the front and all around the house or the exterminating procedure will kill all of them." He said the tenting itself will cost about $350 and that he will also have to board his Dalmatian during the process. "It's just one thing after the other," Harpe said., "The sad part is that the termites might be back in a week and I won't even know it."
