Catholics plan church at university
By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Construction plans for a Catholic church designed to cater to Florida International University (FIU) students will go before the Dade County Zoning Appeals Board Monday, May 3. The church, which will be named Saint Agatha Parish, FIU Campus Ministry, has been designed by South Dade architect William B. Hall. St. Agatha Catholic Church, which has its rectory at 2035 SW 97th Ave., has been meeting at Coral Park High School on Sundays and at Tamiami Mall during the week. Hall said the general layout of the new church will include a church building, with seating for 550, an adjoining chapel with 64 seats, a social hall with another 400 seats, and a fourth building for housing priests and church offices. "It's intended to be a campus ministry for the college, and it will offer counseling and social activities," said Hall. If approved, the church will be built on five acres of land across SW 107th Avenue from the FIU campus entrance. Cost is estimated at $470,000, Hall said. Although he has not been authorized to go into working drawings and bids, the architect said he hopes the church will have a contract and groundbreaking within three months. Construction should take about nine months, he added. Hall said he was chosen for the job because of his work in the past. "I've done other work for the Archdiocese in South Dade — St. Catherine of Siena, St. Louis Catholic Church and St. Richard's he said. If passed by the Zoning Board, St. Agatha's will have Father William L. O'Dea as pastor. ⋆ ⋆ ⋆ Saint Agatha was an early Christian virgin martyred by a Roman consul named Quintian. He forced her into a house of prostitution and then had her tortured. Before death, Agatha had a vision of St. Peter. She is named in the canon of the Roman Mass, and her feast day is Feb. 5, on which date she figures in the calendar of "The Book of Common Prayer,"
Perrine minister guides youths on Europe bicycle tours
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer Traveling by bus or train has its advantages, but it doesn't compare to the challenge and excitement of touring Europe on two wheels. And that is precisely what Rev. Thomas Watson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Perrine, had in mind when he created the Spinning Spokes tour for students nearly seven years ago. Rev. Watson was interested in finding a way to challenge the mental, physical, cultural and spiritual elements untapped in many youths, and the 40-miles a day bicycle trip does just that. Today, his 22-year-old son, Tim Watson, who recently graduated from Florida State University, has taken over much of the work involved in planning the tours, although the project has remained a family one. Mrs. Marlys Watson, the pastor's wife, and their daughter Tracy, 19, go along on all the trips and tend the cook wagons, where all the food for the cyclers is prepared. Hundreds of local students have participated in the Spinning Spokes tour since it first began in the summer of 1970. Come June, many more will take up the challenge of cycling through Belgium, France, Germany, Holland and Luxembourg for 13 of the 19 days they will spend in Europe. "It is not a racing tour, we travel at a pace everyone can do," said Tim, "but it is designed to be a challenge." The only requirement is that the students be 14 or going into the ninth grade and be willing to pedal the organization's 10-speed bikes through the European countries. "We have as many girls as boys who sign up for the trip, and about 85 per cent of the students who have gone bike the whole way through." said Tim, who has participated in almost all of the trips. Spinning Spokes has 125 10-speed bicycles stored in Luxembourg for the summer trips, and several workers travel a few days in advance to get them in working condition for the cyclists. The students, accompanied by about 10 adults, stay at European campsites where every night they participate in skits, singouts and talent shows and are usually joined by friendly Europeans. Five vehicles — two cook wagons, two fully equipped vans with emergency repair and medical supplies, and a van which carries the 20 tents, luggage and souveniers — accompany the students throughout the trip. Spinning Spokes T-shirts, jackets and shorts, plus an American flag bike sign which flies high over cyclists' handle bars are supplied for the students. Perhaps the most enticing part of the trip is the cost. The $699 charge per person covers all expenses, including air fare from Miami to Luxembourg and back to Miami. It also includes a six-hour cruise down the Rhine River, all bus rides and sightseeing tours. There will be three tours this summer, the first scheduled to depart June 11 and return July 2. There is one group leaving July 5 through July 23; and the last summer tour leaves July 26 and returns to Miami Aug. 13. Interested students can call 235-0739 for further information and details.
