Landscape award
During the annual Landscape Awards Banquet of the Dade County Chapter of the Florida Nurserymen and Growers Association, awards were presented for the landscaping of the Leo West home in Gables Estates. In addition to the owner, awards were made to Robert Blanch as the designer and to Rod-Mar Landscaping Inc., as the landscape contractor. Both firms are in Coral Gables.
There's a fungus among us
If you've recently moved to South Florida, you'll probably face a mildew problem sooner or later. The question is, how do you control it? There is no easy, sure way to control mildew since the warm humid climate promotes its rapid growth. It is very possible for mildew to grow in a brand new house as well as older houses. This is caused by moisture in the building materials. Mildew is a fungus which thrives in warm, poorly ventilated, and shaded, poorly lighted spots. Therefore, to control it from growing, get rid of any damp soil or heavy vegetation which is keeping the walls damp and encouraging mildew. Keep all vents in the foundation open during the summer. A vapor resistant cover can also be placed over the ground in crawl space to cut down on moisture. If you have central air and a dehumidifier consult the manufacturer or your local dealer and follow their instructions for efficient operation to control mildew. A small electric light burned continuously in a closet often provides enough dry heat to prevent mildew. However, make certain the bulb does not touch clothing or other items. Chemical absorbers such as silica gels, activated alumina or calcium chloride are also available.
Use logic to gain storage in kitchen
In some kitchens, disorganized or inadequate storage leads to daily "search and deploy" missions. Food and utensils have to be hunted in one place, then taken to another place for use. All this wasted time and effort could be avoided by having enough cabinets near each kitchen work center, and by organizing storage space in a logical fashion. Here are some suggestions. Foods and utensils used together should be stored together at point of first use. Example: coffee, coffee pot and measuring spoon near the sink, because water is required. Store food preparation tools together: knives, parers, measuring cups, wooden spoons, mixing bowls, beaters and blenders. Near the range, store pot covers, pot holders, testing spoons, spatulas, even platters and vegetable dishes in which hot food is served. Keep china and glasses near the cleanup center, so items can be stored as they are dried or removed from the dishwasher. Store most-used items in cabinets within easy reach — between eye and hip level. Put heavy or awkward items at waist level or below. Use cabinet features that facilitate storage: adjustable, pull-out and lazy suzan shelves, cutlery drawers and tray dividers, for example.
