What would have happened to the little Dutch boy who put his finger in the hole in the dike, if no one had come along to plug the hole? The poor boy wouldn't have lasted too long. Just like the diets I tried, over and over again years ago when I was overweight, before I understood what else I needed to succeed. There are lots of factors that combine to help an in-dividual reach a particular goal. Self-motivation is cer-tainly enormously important. But without one other basic ingredient, even self-motivation may falter. That commodity, my friend, is people. I needed people then, and I need them now. So do you. It's a fact of life no one can contradict. When I was overweight. I needed them in two ways. First, it was a tremendous source of encouragement to be surrounded by people who had the same problem I did, who understood my cravings for manicotti at four in the morning. And my feelings of shame and guilt when I gave in to them. But I also needed friends and loved ones who perhaps never had to fight my fight, but who appreciated the ef-fort I was putting forward to achieve a new body. And a new way of life. I remember one time having dinner at Dolores' house. She knew I was trying to lose weight and she had prepared a meal with enough ingredients to satisfy me as well as the other guests. I was wonderful that night. Not once did I give in to one of her legendary home-made biscuits or her sweet potato pudding. As we were saying good night, she took me aside and said, "I just want you to know that I'm proud of you. I didn't see you go off your diet once." Talk about rewards! She not only made my evening for me. I floated on air all the next day and part of the follow-ing. I learned that once people know they're needed, they're only too happy to help. But they have to know. So, tell your husband or your girl friend or your boss that you'd really appreciate an encouraging word as you progress on your diet. But don't forget this. They're moving towards their own goals, too. Make sure you notice, out loud. Most cuts of pork today are higher in protein and lower in fat.
