Coral Gables detectives halt burglary in progress

Two Coral Gables detectives cruising through a residential neighborhood ran across a house burglary in progress and arrested two intruders Thursday, May 6, at 12:32 p.m. Detectives Joel Tierce and J.J. Carroll passed a home at 5660 Granada Blvd., and noticed a man on the front porch and a woman waiting in a car in the driveway. After observing from a distance, the detectives returned to the house and pulled into the driveway, blocking the car as the woman tried to pull out. While Detective Carroll stopped to question the woman, Detective Tierce looked for the man around the back of the house and saw him standing inside the dining room. When the intruder noticed Tierce, he bolted from the back door and jumped across the fence. Police said that Tierce, believing the man to be armed, fired three shots and began chasing him through neighborhood yards. He finally caught the burglar at 5701 Marius. During the chase, the suspect dropped a screwdriver, the object Tierce had thought was a weapon. Arrested on charges of burglary and possession of burglary tools, were 25-year-old Edward Caldwell of Miami Springs and 26-year-old Mildred Devaux, of northwest Miami. Caldwell is reportedly involved in several breaking and entering incidents in Coral Gables. The Gables home Caldwell allegedly burglarized is that of JackNorton.
