Sunset celebrates 80 years
Sunset Elementary School, 5120 SW 72nd Ave., will be celebrating its 80th birthday with an old fashioned field day Saturday, May 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will also commemorate the community's growth since 1896. The public is invited to pack a box lunch and join in the activities which will include races, contests, square dancing, gymnastics and a parent-child softball game which will start at 1:30 p.m. Exhibits depicting eight decades of the community and the school (formerly called Coco Plum School, Larkins School and South Miami School) will be on exhibit. Pioneer Gabelites will remember when the area was not much more than palmetto and pine woods. In 1896, Adam Richards donated land at Erwin and Sunset Drive and A. H. Ramsey, along with James Hobbs and John Burtashaw, built a little one-room school house for grades one through eight, named Coco Plum School. In 1898, Burtashaw's father-in-law, Wilson Larkins, moved to the area and established a post office which became a weekly freight stop for loading fruits and vegetables. Shortly after, the school became known as Larkins. In 1911, Larkins School was relocated to the present site on Sunset Drive and Schoolhouse Road. The one-room schoolhouse and the "Teacherage" which were built that year are still in use at the school, though for different purposes. The curriculum then reflected the influences of the times. In 1915, among their studies girls were taught to cook and boys were taught to raise pigs and tend garden. By 1926, school enrollment soared from the orginal class of 18 to more than 130 students. As the years passed and the community grew, new classrooms and facilities were added. In 1928, as South Miami School, it was on the list of superior standard schools. Rapid growth occured during the 30s and 40s and the physical plant also grew. Yet by 1949 conditions were so crowded that eighth graders were sent to Coconut Grove School. Then in 1952, South Miami School became an elementary and was renamed Sunset Elementary School. The school has continued to grow and through a very active PTA and active community support, they have added a playground shelter and over the years funded air-conditioners for most of the classrooms. Recently, Sunset Elementary was awarded the Florida Elemenatary School Principal's Association Little Red Schoolhouse Award.
