Fine flicks for film fans
movie review . . . erica meyer Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson ride into town Thursday in their new western, Missouri Breaks; but until that particular cavalry gallops into town, there's not much new showing on South Dade screens. That's not to say there isn't plenty of moviegoing worth the price of admission. If you haven't caught them yet, here's a selection of fine flicks currently flashing for local film fans: • All The President's Men — A hardhitting, involving, inside look at the reporting that uncovered the Watergate scandal. Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman are at their peaks and Jason Robards is no slouch either. (Gables) • Family Plot — Alfred Hitchcock's newest is a little short on chilling suspense, but it makes up for that lack with good humor, a thrilling driver's-eye-view of a car careening down a mountain road and some personable portrayals by Karen Black, Bruce Dern, Barbara Harris and William DeVane. (Dadeland Twin 1) • The Man Who Would Be King — Sean Connery and Michael Caine are adventurers off to be rulers in a remote Himalayan country. Connery is mature and masterful; Cain is cockney, cunning and likeable. The movie is a pleasure. (Parkway) • Robin and Marian — Connery's maturity stands him in good stead as Robin Hood 20-years-later. His maid Marian, a maid no longer, is Audrey Hepburn. If we could all wear that well, the face lift folks would be out of business. The movie is photographed like an oil painting and the plot is full of human foibles, longings and love. (Miracle) • Bad News Bears — Walter Matthau is a Little League coach with a penchant for beer, bragging and finally, buckling down to the adult urge to win vs. the kids desire to simply play a little basic baseball. Tatum O'Neal is a dandy pitcher and her teammates are an expressive and involving crew. Not recommended for young children. (Riviera, Lowes Kendall, Westchester) • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest — This year's Academy Award stunner features Jack Nicholson slipping from sanity as he tries to instill satire and sass into an insane asylum. (Twin Gables)
Good food served courteously
Imperial Garden 8727 S. Dixie Hwy., 666-6111. Hours: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., daily. Ample parking. All major credit cards accepted. dining out ERICA MEYER The plate was too hot to touch but the food looked and smelled too good to wait for. So, defying all risk, I spooned ahead. The dish was Sizzling Subgum Wor Ba, an Imperial Garden specialty and it tasted as good as it looked. Savory chunks of crab meat and chicken, tiny curled-up shrimp and mouthfuls of roast pork were generously mixed with snow peas, water chestnuts, mushrooms and Chinese vegetables. The vegetables were crisp; the meat was tender. Though the prices on the menu look steep, especially for lunch, the portions are large. The $6.95 serving of the Subgum Wor Ba was about enough for three people or, in my case, for one meal in the restaurant and two later at home. The six-page menu offers a variety of individual and family combination selections as well as main dishes. There is a full page of drink selections, including a light, white, faintly sweet Chinese grape wine, Wan Fu from 75 cents a glass or $4 a bottle. The appetizers range from the routine (egg rolls, barbecued ribs, won ton soup) to the unusual (dim sum — Chinese meat balls, roast pork ends and fried won ton). The special house soup is a large bowl of chicken broth with chunks of crab meat, chicken and pork plus shrimp and vegetables and a fried won ton. The $1.75 bowl was enough for two people and our friendly waitress brought the second bowl without even being asked. Cantonese suggestions offer the usual moo goo gai pan (shredded chicken with Chinese vegetables) for $1.25 and a tempting Hawaiian duck browned and crisped with mixed fruits and sweet sauce and topped with lichee and kumquats for $5.25. There's a full set of chow meins, chop sueys, fried rice selections, poultry dishes, sweet and sour preparations (including lobster, $8.50), egg foo young, lo meins and beef, seafood and pork dishes starting at $2.75. The house specialties — including the Subgum Wor Ba — give the greatest indication of the restaurant's versatility. Pecan Chicken is prepared with ham, water chestnuts, mushroom, snow peas, vegetables and pecans with a boned chicken breast ($6.50). Imperial Kingdom Shrimp is a shrimp scampi derivative for $6.50 and fish are well represented with a boneless Florida snapper lightly breaded and glazed with sweet and sour sauce. One entree is labeled simply, "something different" and is described as minced lean pork wrapped in bacon, crisped and covered with sweet fruit sauce. If you can't choose among the varied sweet and sour selections, one house specialty is a combination platter with pork, chicken and shrimp. Desserts, as in most Chinese restaurants, are limited, but a fortune cookie is only a dime.
