South Miami Hospital's Director of Development Lynn Kandel, along with Nurse Karen Bordo and Health Fair Chairman Doris Webb announce the Fair on Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15 in the hospital's parking lot.
Hospital offers free tests, exhibits
In dedication "to your continued good health," South Miami Hospital is holding a two-day health fair with free films, medical testing and exhibits. On Friday and Saturday, May 14 and 15, the Hospital's parking lot at 7400 SW 62nd Ave., will be overflowing with things to see and do. It all starts at 10 a.m. Friday with an opening ceremony conducted by South Miami Mayor Jack Block. City commissioners, Congressman Dante Fascell and state Senator Ralph Poston may also be present and a drum and bugle corps will usher in the color guard. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Films will be shown in the church across the street from the hospital and 17 agencies will stage exhibits on everything from alcoholism to arthritis, including Social Security and Medicare information. Free testing will be conducted by the American Cancer Society, the Florida Society for Prevention of Blindness, the Hearing and Speech Center of Florida, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the National Kidney Foundation, the University of Miami's Sickle Cell Center and the Mailman Center for Child Development. Admission is free and the public is invited. The Fair is part of a joint effort by the Hospital's auxiliary and service groups: the Auxiliary, the Associates, the Golddiggers, the Development Committee and various in-service groups and departments of the hospital. General Chairman for the event is Mrs. Edgar (Doris) Webb, president of the Auxiliary.

Hospital celebrates
"Healthy birthday to you. Healthy birthday to you. Healthy birthday dear..." Wait a minute, that's not how the song goes! Well, that's the way it's being sung this week at Coral Gables Hospital. The theme for National Hospital Week, May 9 to 15, is Healthy Birthday, America. To mark the special week, Coral Gables Hospital, on Douglas Road, is holding tours of the facility on Wednesday, May 12 at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The public is also invited to a 1 p.m. showing of the film "Lady Beware" sponsored by the Dade County Rape Treatment Center. "A discussion lead by a speaker from the Dade Rape Awareness Program will follow the film," said hospital administrator Richard Thomas.
CHI needs volunteers
Contributions for equipment and volunteers to assist patients are being sought by the newly formed Day Treatment Center of the Mental Health and Crisis Intervention Department operated for Dade County by Community Health of South Dade. Inc. (CHI) at 10300 SW 216th St. "A day treatment center is a facility used as an alternative to costly hospitalization," Mrs. Bonnie R. Watson, center director, said in a letter to area civic clubs. "It also serves as an intermediate facility, allowing patients who are discharged from hospitals to gradually re-enter the community and receive assistance while attempting to rebuild their lives. "Due to a limitation of funds, we are unable to purchase the necessary equipment for the program and are appealing for assistance in obtaining equipment or funds with which to purchase equipment," she said. Items needed include ping-pong, pool and card tables, a basketball hoop and backboard, a refrigerator, a record player and records, coffee and cocoa supply, cards and games such as chess, checkers, dominoes, Scrabble and puzzles.
