UM swimmer eyes Olympics
By ERICA MEYER Staff Writer Five years ago, Pat Hines' mom refused to let her go surfing until she learned to swim; now, Pat is training for the Olympic swimming team. Pat, from Washington, D.C., graduates from the University of Miami this month. She's still living on the Coral Gables campus and is spending at least three hours a day training for upcoming Olympic trials. During Pat's sophomore year, the University granted its first sports scholarships to female athletes and Pat was one of the recipients. This year, imcoming freshmen females will be able to qualify for full scholarships. Two other University of Miami swim team females are also training towards possible Olympic competition. Pat's event is the 100-meter backstroke, Lisa Sward is in the 100-meter freestyle and J. B. Buchanan is working on the 100-meter breaststroke. Two potential competitors for Great Britian's Olympic swim team are also training at the University pool: David Wilkie, who won a silver medal in the 1972 games and Paul Naisby. Pat finds the grueling training worthwhile because "If you know you can do it, the fun part is getting there. Still, you can't swim forever and it did help me get through school. I'd like to coach." Pat Hines ... In training Pat also has a potential job lined up with an underwater adventure television series as a deep sea photographer and actress. She would also do some scriptwriting and some art work. She's already produced a series of cartoons, "Plants Alive," that she hopes to market. "I'd tell high school girls who want to do this to just keep swimming," Pat said. "They shouldn't be shy about it. You can't just wait to be asked to take an athletic scholarship when you're a woman; you have to go bang on doors." "When I first got here," Pat remembers, "girls in sports were considered jocks. Now there's a prestige to it. You're physically fit, strong, not fat and you're not sitting around; you're doing something." Pat, 21, maintained a "B" average at the University while keeping up a heavy training and swim team competition schedule. She has to watch her weight and often skips lunch. "Because you're in a swim suit so much of the time, you can't ignore an extra roll of fat," she said. "I don't eat doughnuts or cane sugar. I have a big breakfast and dinner because swimming builds up an appetite. I eat a lot of fruit, vegetables and eggs plus some honey and some salads. Starches are good for energy. You can have spaghetti and lasagna." The swimming schedule taught Pat "to budget my time. You can't waste any. If you aren't in the water, you feel guilty. But it has to be fun. The minute I quit enjoying it, I'll quit doing it. "My parents want me to do well with this, but they don't really understand it. Swimming is what I do for myself. I could have quit two months ago after the college finals. I didn't swim well. "But, I couldn't face quitting. You just keep going." The final meet to try for an Olympic opening is May 19 in South Carolina. That's followed by the Olympic trials in Long Beach, Calif., June 17 to 19. After that, it's August in Montreal for the Olympics. Pat says U.M. Coach Charlie Hogsdon really keeps the women team members going. "We're emotional," she admits. "We quit every day. But Charlie helps us. He has a hard job keeping the girls going." Hogsdon makes team members put in an hour of Nautilus - isometric type stretching exercises - each day, plus swim practice. "Practice is at least two hours a day," Pat says. "You do the hard sets first and you practice several strokes to keep your muscles toned up. "I would like to coach to make swimming more fun for kids, say at age seven. Then they are serious at eight and by 12 they are ready to work. Girls used to peak at swimming at 13 or 14-years-old. "That used to be the prime age. But at 21, you're smarter, stronger and in better control," Pat said. When she leaves the pool each day, through the locker room halls, Pat passes underneath a poster hung over the water cooler. Quoting Theodore Roosevelt, the poster admonishes: "Credit belongs to the man who is in the arena . . . who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again . . . who, if he wins, knows the triumph of high achievement; if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so his place shall never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."
